[OT] WHAT NEXT ??

. .. "Pat" wrote in message ... Just when my back is starting to feel more normal, suddenly out of the blue the right side of my face is insanely painful, for no apparent reason. It's not a toothache, it's not an earache, and it mostly hurts in the juncture of the upper and lower jaw, but there's no clicking sound and it's only on one side. It *really* hurts when I chew, so I am not eating. And of course it happened 10 minutes after the local clinic closed, so I couldn't even make an appointment for tomorrow. I did speak with a nurse-on-call who said she has absolutely no idea what could be wrong. Well, neither have I. It feels like someone smacked me with a brick. But absolutely nothing happened that could have caused this. - - - - - - - - - - - Is TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) a possibility. A clicking sound is common, but is not always present. MaryL That's just what I was going to say. Joy |

"MaryL" wrote in message . .. "Pat" wrote in message ... MLB wrote You need a good dentist. Are you saying that a dentist can fix this? - - - - - - - - - - - A dentist can work on it and usually can make corrections. I'm not sure if I would call it "fixing" it. My sister had this--incredible pain. The dentist ground down as couple of teeth to repair her bite, and for awhile she slept with a type of brace in her mouth (not nearly as uncomfortable as it sounds, she said). Fortunately, she no longer has any problems. MaryL My dentist sent me to an orthodontist. He fitted me with what I think he called a splint. At any rate, it was a gizmo that fit over my left teeth. I was to wear it all the time except when eating and sleeping. I had to go back every month or so to have it checked, and usually adjusted to the changes in my jaw. After about a total of six months I was able to stop wearing it, and the pain was completely gone. He did suggest I see my dentist for a crown (to replace a missing tooth between two teeth) and a couple of implants to replace others. After hearing the prices, I got the crown, and I haven't had problems since. That was several years ago. I do notice the clicking if I open my mouth wide, but I don't have any pain. Joy |

But absolutely nothing happened that could have caused this. Did the nurse on call quiz you about other symptoms? This concerns me because when I had jaw pain it was the first (and only) symptom I had that three arteries in my heart were 90-98%. I found out that's not uncommon for women. The pain was at the juncture of the upper/lower jaw, and didn't radiate anywhere. I was sure I had TMJ. In fact, I was so sure that the only reason I went to the ER is that I was hosting a large family Thanksgiving dinner and didn't think I could get through it without some kind of pain control. I don't recall the pain being worse with eating though--I'd bet you *do* have a TMJ or similar problem. Haven't you had teeth pulled recently? That could have put your jaw out of alignment. Don't mean to scare you. I just always think I should tell this story because normally I wouldn't have gone to the ER at all. I truly had a guardian angel or I wouldn't be here today. :-) Do have yourself checked out. You have a lot of little children in fur coats depending on you. :-) Sherry |

Scary stories is one thing you can always be counted on for, so I do take that into account on reflection, but nevertheless my initial feeling was of abject terror. Seriously? I do that? Honestly, I didn't realize it. Yeah, it seems you often write about the worst possible outcome for any given situation. |

I'm not that way about myself, either. I'm usually of the "ignore it and it'll probably go away" camp about myself. When it comes to the cats or the kids, then I freak out. Sherry |

But in 2007 when I needed a stent, it was on the right side only. That time I knew something was up right away. I don't know the reason for why which side was hurting. Sherry |

"Sherry" wrote I was so clueless when it happened to me. I went to the ER for jaw pain expecting to be sent home with pain meds and advice to see a specialist. Nobody was more surprised than me when they wheeled in an EKG machine. =================== Sherry - I've been waiting to decide whether to call a doctor or a dentist until you reply to my question, asked here and via email (twice): Was the pain on both sides of your jaw? If not, which side? Please respond ASAP. I can't find your phone number anymore but I've done nothing else besides search for your number and check my email and this thread since about 9:30 this morning.... |
