Litter mat question

Does anyone here use litter mats? If so, do you find them effective?

I find myself sweeping the floor around the litter box every time I change
it, so I looked up the mats, and they're pretty pricey. I'd like to know if
they're worth it before I put out all that money.

I have one in use and it does cut down on the amount of litter being
tracked out of the box, but it doesn't take care of the problem
entirely.

I don't have a special "litter mat", per se. But when I had the opportunity
to buy a nice plush bath mat (Persia's box is in the master bathroom, it's
really the only place for it in this house) I got a set. One of them is a
smaller mat and the litter box fits perfectly on it. It does help to
contain some of litter. It's easy enough to carry outside and shake out
every couple of days and it does help somewhat with the tracking. But of
course I still have to sweep the floor far too much for my taste.

My new kitten likes to throw her litter halfway across the room when she
digs, so I did two things that have helped a lot but still don't eliminate
the problem. First, I got a fully enclosed litterbox with a door flap.
Second, I got a "scratching pad" from ShopRite for $4 that I placed on the
floor in front of the litterbox. It's one of those corrugated cardboard
ones, but it's about 2'x2'x0.5" and has a piece of cardboard on the bottom
that traps all the litter inside. I still have to sweep every other day.

I have one of those long handled brush and dustpan sets in the
bathroom (so useful I am going to buy one for the kitchen) okay so it
says on the brush that it's suitable for the elderly and those who
have difficulty bending- the jury is out on the first statement but I
have no difficulty bending and no plans to ever have any difficulty
bending but it's wonderful for sweeping up spilt cat litter, which
when you have a cat who kicks litter all over the place (Sarsi)- I
just sweep it up every time I go past and see any, takes seconds.

I did try a mat but as I don't have access to a garden unless I
carefully carried it down the stairs it wasn't much of a help- it did
reduce the amount of litter that got tracked around the house but then
when it came to shaking it out I had to try and do it over a bin and
most of it would end up on the floor so I still had to grab the brush
and dustpan

I'm not sure what you mean by a "litter mat", but I do have a plastic mat
that's placed right at the door of the litterbox (it's a covered box), and
partially under the litterbox to keep it in place. The top side of the mat
has little "nubbly" things that get between kitty toes to help dislodge
the litter as they step out. Is that what you mean? It does trap a lot of
the litter, but I still have to sweep the floor every day. I have a little
dustbuster vacuum (small, hand-held vacuum cleaner with rechargeable
battery), so I sweep all the litter into a little pile and then vacuum it
up.

The mat cost $7, btw.

I just wondered about the difference in cost between getting a deeper
container (not necessarily a conventional cat l/b) so they cannot dig the
litter out when they are scratching to get the perfect depth or getting a
litter mat.
KTC always scratched litter out from her box which was a sort of standard
size, too small for Boyfie.
I finally persuaded him to use a bigger one if it is filled with leaves and
earth if he is desperate but even so he can hardly fit himself into it and
he digs the clean contents out accidentally.
Would your cats use one of the enclosed boxes I have read about? The sort
with with a hood over it where they enter a hole in the front?
If they would, it would stop the litter being all over the floor perhaps.
It would not prevent them tracking litter from their paws, though.
It's just an idea.
I like to keep Boyfriend in overnight - he resolutely refuses to use a box
with just cat litter in but if I hide the litter underneath with leaves and
some earth on top, he will, but he has to be bursting even so.

Joy, did you see my post the other day where I said that I find them at
my local pet store for about $7? This is at Pet Food Express - I don't
know if you have those down south. They're a smallish local chain, but
"local" might include southern CA, too. If you have them, check it out.
