OT - I'm SO Discouraged
Granted, I was carrying a lot of fluid (my feet and hands were twice their
normal size), but at the surgeon's office I weighed in at 104. The day I was discharged from the hospital I weighed myself on my digital scale and it showed 104.0. Well, I just weighed myself again and I weighed 97.6! That's 6.4 pounds I lost in two days!!! The surgeon won't do the surgery to reverse the ileostomy until I gain at least 20 - 25 pounds, and I can't do that going backwards. Eating and drinking sugary/high fat foods didn't help - they just gave me diarrhea and made the situation worse. Back on-topic... does anyone have any suggestions / recipes for high caloric / high protein meals and snacks? -- Hugs, CatNipped See all our masters at: http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/CatNipped See the RPCA FAQ site, by Mark Edwards, at: http://www.professional-geek.com/rpcablog/ Email: L(dot)T(dot)Crews(at)comcast(dot)net |

Didn't you weigh 88 or so before it all started? Maybe there's something about hospital food that agrees with you. But seriously, with all your issues, I think you should see a nutritionist. The things that seem to work for me (or others) may excaberate your colon issues. Surely they have an arsenal of supplements or protein shakes that you can tolerate. I've found that gaining weight is more difficult and slow than I thought. It's almost like dieting to lose weight. It's slow, and the body seems to plateau on a given number and you don't think you're ever going to get past it. My personal faves are nuts (good fat), canned fruit (with heavy syrup), supplementing with a Boost drink. And never, ever, skipping meals OR thinking you can just substitute Ensure or Boost for a meal. I switched to pancakes with syrup for breakfast and saw almost an immediate, permanent gain. The biggest obstacle to overcome was never, ever skipping a meal. And I've made a dedicated effort to eat bigger portions of the regular heart-healthy food that I've always eaten. Twenty-five pounds is an awful lot for your to gain, and that surprises me that it's recommended for someone with Chronic Heart Failure. Your heart will have to work that much harder with the extra weight. |

You probably should see a nutritionist/dietician. Be sure to get a physician's prescription to see one (often associated with a hospital) so your insurance will pay for it. I assume you were being given fluids while you were in the hospital. If so, that can be the solution to your weight gain. I gained a tremendous amount of weight in a very short time when I was in the hospital, but I also lost it very quickly after I was released because it was actually fluid gain. MaryL |

He says that if I don't gain weight it means that the intestines will not be
able to sustain me after the ileostomy is reversed. So he's using it as an indicator for whether or not to do the surgery. I don't really know the whys and wherefores, he's a bit taciturn (you know how surgeons only like to see their patients unconscious). -- Hugs, CatNipped See all our masters at: http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/CatNipped See the RPCA FAQ site, by Mark Edwards, at: http://www.professional-geek.com/rpcablog/ Email: L(dot)T(dot)Crews(at)comcast(dot)net "hopitus" wrote in message ... Hugs, CatNipped I can't see where recipes are going to do you any good because from what you say, you (for now) are unable to cook. I was going to suggest parking yourself before the tv and having the DH get you lotsa fast food from every drive-by in town....but something rang a bell in my mind from something I learned in the school I attended before qualifying for medical work. There is a key sentence in this wiki definition which explains, at least to me, the reason you don't seem to be able to gain much weight at all. It states the function of small bowel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_intestine You also say a good portion of yiour small bowel has been disconnected. If I am correct, you are seriously lacking much of the digestive process for food intake absorption (small bowel) and no matter what you eat, this mechanical anatomy state will prevent your goal. Your GI surgeon knows all this and a great deal more. Is he a few sandwiches short of a picnic for ordering you to gain weight? |

OT - I'm SO Discouraged
Please, please, please CN involve a medical professional. I have been
where you are now, I have lost 5 ft (thankfully humans have 29 ft) of small and large bowel. I could eat nothing without getting sick - to be delicate - both uh, ends. I had a feeding tube for awhile to gain weight. To counteract the disfunction of the bile acids I was on a med called Cholestran and later Questran. They are both primarily cholesterol drugs, but they also work for the condition. They may use something else now. My GI prescribed them. The general surgeon who did my surgeries was worthless when it came to what you describe. Even today I must eat ONLY very low or no fiber foods AND very low carbs. Also no red meat protein. Very limited specific kinds of fats. No nuts, nothing with seeds - like strawberries. Fiber and carbs in cases like yours and mine can result in an impaction and or partial obstructions. Without my nutrionist I would be in big trouble. Also, if not already doing so, a stool softener not a laxative can keep constipation at it's dangers away. Immodium regularly treats the other. Do not try this on your own. All my research never came up with what my nutrionist did and she worked in full harmony with my GI and PCP doc. My GI knew what the prob was right away when he read the post op report. Do not let your PCP or anyone else blow you off. Many, many purrs. My surgeon was not surprised and said it should all be "gone" within a couple of weeks. He was right--and note that it took longer to lose than to gain. However, it was not true weight gain. Obviously, it was fluids. MaryL |

OT - I'm SO Discouraged - AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
Got on the digital scale just now and weighed 94.4 pounds. I know I was
carrying a lot of fluid and had a stomach flu (I'm still forcing myself to eat and keep it down, but it's hard), but 9.6 pounds in three days!!!! I'm never going to "qualify" for the reversal surgery. I could cream, punch a pillow, kick a chair, but frankly, I'm so tired and I hurt so much that I just can't get up the energy for any of that. Sorry, I'll try very hard to cut down on the number of "Lori's boring medical issues" posts. -- Hugs, CatNipped See all our masters at: http://www.PossiblePlaces.com/CatNipped See the RPCA FAQ site, by Mark Edwards, at: http://www.professional-geek.com/rpcablog/ Email: L(dot)T(dot)Crews(at)comcast(dot)net "CatNipped" wrote in message ... I knew you meant "scream". Under the circumstances, I think we're all
willing to overlook an occasional typo. And, as far as I'm concerned, feel free to vent here. You need some outlet for your frustration.
