Default [OT] Headers for NG messages

I'm hoping someone more knowledgable than I can help.

I only have access to Outlook Express at work, so please don't tell me to
get a better newsreader.

For some odd reason that probably has something to do with our internet
security, I can post new messages to Usenet but can't post replies. When I
try to reply, when I press "send" I get a blank "information" dialog box
with three blank buttons on it, but pressing any of those buttons doesn't do
anything. Closing the dialogue box just leaves the unsent reply sitting on
my screen, most annoying.

So I have come up with a cunning plan. I can post "new" posts just by
copying the text from an original message and then adding my reply. However,
this means it won't thread properly as it won't have the refrences to the
message I'm replying to in the headers. But I know there is a way of
changing headers....

Is there any way I can change headers or include new headers using OE so
that a "new" post references aa message ID so it threads properly?

There is another work around I have in my mind without having to go post via
Google (also most annoying) but it involves a bit more work and me
remembering to do it every work day - rather unlikely knowing me.

Thanks,

Yowie

I don't use Outlook Express, but you want to copy someone's
Message-ID:, make a new References: header out of it, and paste it
into a new message? Even if that were possible, I imagine that
learning even any new newsreader would be less tedious than that.

I'd take a second look at your settings in OE. I don't think your
problem is a network security issue, since whether an article is new
or a follow-up, it's created using the same NNTP command, "POST". OE
does have some settings that can make it treat new posts differently
from replies. Look under Tools-Options-Send especially.

Also, if you think that it's a bug with a non-up-to-date version of
OE, then last I checked (which admittedly was long ago), OE upgrades
were bundled with Internet Explorer upgrades, so I would check
Microsoft's update site too.

This is pretty easy to do in newsreaders that let you edit the headers
along with the message, as mine does, but I am not even sure if
Outlook will let you create new headers in your message. I doubt you
can just put it at the top of the message body and expect it to work
(although it might, if Outlook doesn't put a blank line between the
headers and the message ... hmm)
