Default 10 year old tomcat hiding in cupboard

Our 10 year old tomcat has begun hiding out in a towel cupboard for
long periods of time. He used to do so only when scared, but now he
goes in there constantly (but he'll come out if called). Should we
be concerned about this new behavior?

I would have to agree; if this is a change in behavior, then a visit to
the vet is definitely called for.

If he's off his food I would be a little worried. Is it warm in there?
Maybe he's just looking for a cosy place.

I agree with soft on this matter about taking him to the vet for a check-up.
When you say Tomcat, that implies that he's NOT neutered/fixed. If he
isn't, 'please' get him fixed, and he and both of you will be happier and
he will be healthier. Does he go outdoors at all? If he does and' isn't
fixed,' he will be making kittens, and that's NOT good. Kyla

Whenever there is a big change in a cat's 'normal' behavior, it's
something to be concerned about.

When a cat gets sick, it will instinctively hide.

But, you say you cat will come if you call him...and that's not 'usual'
for a sick cat.

Is he eating, sleeping, and using his litter box normally?

Ten years is getting on in years for a cat, and I would be inclined to
take him in for a checkup, just in case there might be something wrong
with him, that hasn't made him really ill, yet/

It's always much easier to treat an illness, the earlier you catch it.

You cat may just have decided he likes to take naps in your towel
cupboard, but if he was my cat, I would take him to the vet.

How long has it been since you've had blood tests done?

If the answer is 'never', or it's been a long time, this would be a good
time to check and be sure his major organs are working well.

Mr. Orange Tomcat has been coming out of his towel cupboard lately. He
seems happy that I've been opening the blinds so he can look out on the
world. Maybe he was just depressed?
