MaryL There is a strange loop-hole in the tax code that keeps the make overs from being taxable income to the family. That's one reason it has to be done so fast. Then if you read the small print they are usually given a large cash settlement as well to cover things like property tax and utilities. The one family I know that was highly publicized as losing the home (and very much upsetting the neighbors who helped with the make over) did so by deciding to start a construction company. They got the money to start the company by taking out a huge mortgage on their upgraded home, and then the company tanked. Jo
