Perhaps you could elaborate on why you think Science Diet is bad food?

I didn't say it was a "bad food". In fact it probably is better than
quite a few others. What I said is that it "sucks". See my follow-up
to Phil for reasoning. Better yet, do a Google search for "Science
Diet" and "sucks" or "hate" and you will see other testimonials. We
fed it exclusively at the feline specialty hospital where I worked.
The cats wouldn't eat it, it stunk, some choked on it, and we threw
most of it away. It created really stinky poop in the cats that did
eat it. In fact, working for the vet is where I developed my real
dislike for the food. Long ago I had tried it on my own cats, they
quickly refused it, and that was that. I just thought they were
picky. My experience at the hospital proved to me that the food is
crap, not to mention enlightened me to their slimy marketing
techniques. We'd push the food (vets orders) and a few days to weeks
later, people would return it saying their cats hated it. After a
while, I just started wondering why he continued to carry it. But a
lot of what he did was questionable...

I can't speak about Hill's dog foods, other than it gave my dogs
diarrhea which wouldn't resolve, as did most brands of dog food.

-L.

I'd like to see scientific evidence that Science Diet "sucks".

I suspect scientists and investigators don't use words like "sucks" to
describe their findings. The numbers once explained speak loud and clear
for themselves.

Lauren, that just goes to show what you know about nutrition. You would

on

Scie Die so why would I feed it again? I don't know anyone who feeds

Nutro

whose cats do poorly. I'm not saying it's a good food, just that I don't

hear

bad things about cats who eat it.

2¢ here - & not to be confused w/ pros or cons of various people debating
this or that, various diets -

My cats have eaten Science Diet (along w/ some Royal Canin) since '91. I
tried Nutro, just for the heck of it a few years ago, when I read here that
it was a good food (before I later read that its quality then went a bit
downhill). I had two cats at the time, & both cats threw up as soon as I
started to switch them over, even though I mixed it into their usual SD food
gradually. After a few days of them repeatedly throwing up, I gave up on
the idea. Went back to their regular diet & no more throwing up.

Back in the 70's & 80's when I fed mostly 9 Lives (& some other grocery
store foods - all I knew that were available then) to my first cat Sabina,
she *did* have awfully smelly poops. After switching to SD in the early
90's, I no longer noticed those horribly smelly poops, & Debbie's coat
became noticeably shinier after about 3 weeks of eating SD Light.

This is the thing that's drives me nuts about the SD zealots (obviously
not referring to you). I know people whose cats do fine or great on SD.
I know people whose cats don't. Mine included. I have my reasons for not
feeding SD and I don't appreciate certain people on this newsgroup that
my reasons aren't valid. They are valid, as yours for feeding SD. I'm
glad your kitties don't have stinky poops. There have been too many of
those around my house lately!

That's just it. You found something that worked for you, and you went
with it. Great! Apparently for some people, that makes you fodder
for following around and telling you how poor your choices are, and
how "superior" what they feed their cats it. Sheesh.

3. Nutro went off "fixed formula" and onto "least cost formulation" to
compound their diets. That means that the amounts and quality of the
ingredients and nutrient levels can fluctuate with the market prices of the
raw materials. So the final formula at any given time for any batch of
diets may or may not be the same formula as the one actually tested.

Guaranteed analysis is the same. I don't see a problem with this. I
don't care if my protein comes from beef, chicken, or whatever. If
the bag is pulled, it has to meet the guarateed analysis.

Ingredient labels (and the guaranteed analysis) won't change unless the switch
is for longer than 6 months. In the meantime, who knows what the guaranteed
analysis of any given bag's content would be?

It's guarateed to be what's listed on the bag.

IOW,
the final formula is a crap-shoot. Btw, Hill's uses fixed formula
formulation to compound their diets...

Well, I hate Hills for a number of reasons.

...there you go. A Hill's basher come clean!

You are the one continuously following people around and bashing them
for their choice in pet foods. I didn't ask for your assessment of
Nutro. I posted an alternative to SD when someone asked for it, and
you proceeded to tell me how much you hate it, as if I even cared what
you thought. I could care less what you feed your cats. My
experience with SD has proven to me it's crap and the company is
unethical. YMMV, and apparently, it does.
