Getting a quote for a fence
I don't want a fence, but I need some way to keep my cats from
straying and I"d like to start letting them out. Around $2300. That's two 25 foot fences with a 4' gate in each one. I was checking on cat containment systems but putting together a decent one would be around $700 and wouldn't allow them to really roam the yard. So I guess I'll do it, but I won't be eating for a while. I'll line the tops with something like Cat Fence In, because they can easily scale a 6' wood fence. I thought about vinyl but apparently they can scale that as well and it's tougher to attach the netting at the top. |

Seems to me you were asking about plants. I'd think that would be a wonderful place to put a cat garden/play area. Jill |

But while it serves as a fine litterbox, it's only 6' by 10' so not really big enough for a full outdoors setup. No lizards get in there so there isn't much for them to play with! Well, actually I'm afraid that they will kill a certain number of lizards if I let them out, but we really do have plenty of lizards around. I'm thinking that I won't allow free in/out access. I'm afraid that I will be the recipient of a certain number of presents under those condtitions, and while I do like that presents, not that kind. Mostly the cats will just lie under the bushes, just like they did back in NYC. For one thing, the birds here are too big for them to go after. Egrets and Ibisis aren't small little birds. |

No, they're definitely not small birds. I wish I still had the picture of the great blue heron that strolled through my back yard not long ago. Majestic! There are tons of lizards around here, too. Five striped skinks with bright blue tails, rose headed skinks, anole lizards. They're pretty quick. Jill |

Five striped skinks with bright blue tails, rose headed skinks, anole lizards. They're pretty quick. Jill We have several large clumps of thick bushes around the lake, and each clump has a family of Iguanas. There's usually a really big one, maybe 4 feet long. Then there's a slightly smaller one, so those are the mommy and daddy Iguanas. Then come the various kids, ranging from little guys just a foot or so, to much larger kids. It's funny how each clump has a family. When I bike around the lake I always slow down around the bushes because if they're on the side of the path away from the lake, they might make a mad dash to the water as I approach, and I really don't want to hit one. They're so prehistoric looking, like small dinosaurs. They run so funny, feet flying, but they can really move. I try to tell them that I would never hurt them, but they are apparently deaf. |

I'd like my exotic shorthairs to experience the outside world. In my garden. To see the birds and beetles and stuff. Nelli was scared when she saw a spider. Wilbur was scared when I took him outside on a harness and birds were there. He was used to a tiny garden with no trees. so having woodpigeons exploding out of the trees when they saw him was a real shock. I doubt Nelli and Garfie have seen a bird in their whole life. It's not safe to let them outside. No breeder will let you have one unless you promise to keep them inside. and I know why. Because they have no sense about the outside world, they'd get run over immediately by a car, or someone would steal them. They are very intelligent cats, but they are unworldly, if you see what I mean. You might not understand unless you have one. |

They watch the world. But I really want them to have a bit more experience. Cats do roam free around me, but we have foxes and poisonous toads and snakes and some birds that would consider a cat a good sized meal. So while I want them to go out, I want it as safe as I can make it. The used to go out. Back in NYC I had a fenced in yard and they could go out, so I really want to do it for them here. |

They're exotics, not like moggies who can generally fend for themselves. Any way we could see some pics of your new girls? I'm sure they're very pretty! Jill |
