The problem "going" was just a side issue and seems to have been helped
by, of all things, eating prunes rather than taking mega doses of OTC
laxatives!

If you don't like prunes much, dried apricots have the same effect. Eat 4
or 5 a day.

embarrassed toe digging in ground!

My mother got the same results with homemade apple sauce.

Either she was putting something funny into her applesauce or it was the
power of suggestion. The standard diet for an upset system is the BRAT.
Bananas rice applesauce and toast.

Apples contain pectin which is a binding agent. It offsets the fiber.
Especially when you take away the apple peal that has a large part of the
fiber.

I don't doubt it. The only things she puts in her applesauce are apples,
sugar and cinnamon. However, my feeling is that if a placebo works, it
works, even if it is a placebo. By the same token, a psychosomatic pain
hurts just as much as a "real" pain. The only difference is that a
psychosomatic pain can often be helped with a placebo.

Agreed, completely. But I'd add that "real" pains can also be helped
with a placebo. That's the amazing thing about the placebo effect. It
shows how powerful belief and attitude can be.

But do not forget what they are and happily munch on a whole bad of dried
apricots while on a long car trip. I love the darn things.

I hated prunes as a child. I really like the soft flavored "dried plums"
you can buy in foil packages now.

A large portion of the French plums used for drying are grown within fifty
miles of my house and are processed about three miles from here. A favorite
treat was created by one of the ranchers, who spent his evenings at harvest
time washing fresh prune plums, sticking Popsicle sticks in them and
throwing them into the freezer. They are a "give away" at the Prune
Festival and really good.

Jo

A prune festival! I guess any excuse to have a festival....a
neighboring town had their Peach Festival this weekend. Our Watermelon
Festival is in August. I really wanted to go to the Peach Festival but
it was too hot. I settled for a bag of peaches bought at the grocery
today. The sticker said they were from California, but they were
absolutely yummy and I ate them all. Sometimes produce is picked
greenish for long shipment, and not as good as what you get
tree-ripened locally. But these were better than our local ones, I
think.

Me, too. Although I don't quite understand the difference between a prune
and a dried plum. I thought that's what prunes *were*.

Joyce

Marketing pure and simple. Sunsweet decided in their infinite wisdom or
infinite something that the word prune had too may negatives attached and
that it would be easier to sell dried plums.

There is no difference.

LOL! Did they block you completely? Or did you have the biggest bowel
movement of all time?

I don't agree that "real" pains can be helped with a placebo. If anyone had
given me a placebo when I was burning up with cancer pain in hospital I
think when I recovered a bit I would have done them some harm. At the time
I needed morphine - and more morphine - and even more.
Real pain, caused by real illness cannot be controlled by a placebo and it
is ridiculous to suggest that it can.
