Hmm. Well, I'd prefer not to "buy" pets, but I know what you mean - you
still need money to adopt one from a shelter or rescue group.

You could adopt a cat from a "free cat" ad. I object to people giving
animals away, but if I were going to take a cat for free, I'd know I
could trust myself.

But I think a shelter is the best bet because then you know they've
been examined for any illnesses, they've been given vaccinations, and
in most cases they've been spayed/neutered.

When I brought Roxy home from the shelter, she hadn't yet been spayed
because she had a URI and they didn't want to risk surgery. So the
shelter gave me a voucher for free spaying once she was over the cold.
That's not the usual procedure, though. I could have adopted another
kitten who was healthy and already neutered, but I'd fallen in love
with Roxy, so she was the one I had to have!
