My niece Emma took in a little cat which had been alone in a house. He
was being fed and cleaned by someone, but his owner had gotten a new
job a good distance away and had to stay there and only got home
weekends. Emma took him, got him his shots, had him fixed and all was
well. She had a little boy about five weeks ago, and Diego (the cat's
new name) absolutely loved the baby and was very good with him.
TED told Emma it was now safe to let Diego out. He was fine. Emma let
him out and Diego just loved it. He had always been a house cat. The
second day he got out, he was killed on the road. My niece and Andy
her partner were devastated. Firstly Emma blamed herself. Diego wasn't
used to traffic. The road is a cul de sac. There are zillions of cats
running around.
The poor man who had hit Diego was in tears. He had stopped, lifted
him, took him to the vet, but he was dead on arrival. No-one knew
whose cat he was at the time. He came to the door eventually and broke
down. Emma was sorry for him too.
All I could say to Emma was that Diego had been so so happy to be with
her the short time that he was, but it makes you wonder what it's all
about sometimes.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Sometimes there's no understandable reason
for things that happen. All you can do is grieve, accept, maybe learn
something and move on, remembering the good times, however short they were.
