Calico cats - Bad temperament?
Richard wrote:
I just adopted a stray 8-10 week calico female kitten. I told the vet that she was very sweet and I was handling her alot to help her become socialized. The vet replied "Let's hope she stays that way. Most calico cats are quite ill-tempered." She had worked several years at a cat shelter. I was shocked. Is there any evidence that calico cats are more anti-social as adults than mixed breed cats? I know some of you may own a calico cat and have some antedoctal evidence. I am interested in any research or documentation on this issue. Or perhaps the vet was speaking from limited experience? My calico kitten named Maya is a bit skittish, but once she knows who you are is very friendly and affectionate. I want to help her to keep that temperament - any suggestions? PS. I do plan to have her spayed at about 3 months. I have four other inside neutered adult male cats who ignore her or just hiss at her but keep their distance. I have had a Tortie for 5 years. She is a great cat but a bit "vicious" with others. The first time I took her to my vet and mentioned that she had slapped the other cat my vet (female vet) replied, "These cats are all bitches." |

Calico cats - Bad temperament?
-L. wrote: Siamese (and many pointed moggies) are just obnoxious attention hounds. Yep. Almost all of our cats have been Siamese or half siamese. They can be vocal and demanding, but mostly they just want attention. Ragdolls are just dumb. LOL. Jay Jay is a Ragdoll. I wouldn't call him dumb, just too mild to care He's definitely not the brightest though. He's a real sweetheart though. I had hoped Kira would like him by now. He's even milder than Maynard (half siamese), and that's pretty hard to believe. I do think the Calico thing is more gender than color. Females always seem to be more moody. So, odds are going to be higher when you are dealing with all females. Kira would meet the calico description, and she's a Balinese. She even bites when she's purring. Her nickname is Miss Attitude. |

The most wonderfull kittie I've ever had was a tortie. She at first was terrified and hated other cats. When I tried to introduce a second cat, she attacked him enough to bleed and I had to find him another home (neighbor's kid took him). But after I brought home a kitten, she fell in love with him on day three and was wonderfull with other cats from then on. I at one point had 5 cats and she's sleep with all of them in a pile on the bed. |

All the calicos I have every known have always been the most loving cats I know. My Margie has always got to have my attention and my mother-in-law's is always on someone's lap wanting to be petted. People seem to base their opinion on a single instance. They have a bad experience with something and all of that type "are anti social" or no good. Remember a person is bound to get a "bad apple" occasionaly. Reminds me of my dad and bother-in-law. My brother-in-law was greek and him and my dad had an arguement and from then on my dad hated all greeks. Go figure!! |

They are as stupid about birth control as they are about everything else. So they are breeding faster than the smart people. No offense intended toward your Dad, who hopefully was just having a BE.
