'Almost frozen' pit bull rescued
Medical bills mount for emaciated, abused dog that had been used for
fighting.

Syracuse dog control workers on Wednesday found an abandoned pit bull
emaciated, bruised and freezing outside.
They rescued the dog and brought him to the Animal Emergency Clinic on
Erie Boulevard East.
"He came in nearly dead," hospital administrator Marcie Marshall said
Thursday. "His temperature was so low it wouldn't measure on our
thermometer. He pretty much was almost frozen."
Hospital staff warmed the dog and fed him. He gobbled the food -
evidence, they said, that he hadn't been fed in several days. Clinic
staff estimated the pit bull was about 15 pounds underweight.
By Thursday, however, the dog's condition had improved significantly. He
began lifting his head, wagging his tail and licking veterinarians.
Hospital staff nicknamed him Charlie Brown, in honor of the cartoon
character who, in a 1965 Christmas movie, helps a scrawny tree thrive
with a little love.
And while Charlie the pit bull is doing better, he still will face
several challenges in the future. Clinic staff said Charlie likely will
need surgery on his front paw - and possibly amputation - to correct a
fracture that never healed because it was never treated. He also will
need time to allow several bruises, cuts and puncture wounds on his face
to heal.
Clinic staff and police believe Charlie's owner used him in illegal pit
bull fights.
"His face is badly scarred," Marshall said. "He has many wounds on his
ears and face from what appears to be dog fighting. . . . The police are
going to pursue this, and he probably is going to be the object of a
criminal investigation."
As of Thursday night, Syracuse police had not identified Charlie's
owner.
Clinic staff plan to nurse Charlie back to health and care for him until
his fate is decided. It is unclear whether Charlie can be adopted due to
his fighting background.
"Having been a fighting dog, he'll have to be carefully placed,"
Marshall said. "But he hasn't acted aggressively to other dogs or . . .
when we try to feed him, so hopefully, he'll be able to be placed
eventually."

I hate peope who abuse animals. The poor Pits are usually the ones that
it happens to and IMO they are so nice. Hope Charlie Brown can get
adopted to a good home
