Default Abandoned Dog at Shelter Rescues Kittens

Abandoned Dog at Shelter Rescues Kittens
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Reno, Nevada KTVN-2-CBS

You've heard of man bites dog. What about, dog saves cats?

A 2-year-old dog that had been turned over to the Nevada
Humane Society's
shelter in Reno is being credited with rescuing six
abandoned kittens.

Shelter Director Diane Blankenburg says it happened Monday
while the
two-year-old Boxer/Pit Bull mix named Angel was on a walk
with a pair of
volunteers, Frank Gomez and his 9-year-old stepson, Joel
Fontes.

They were walking on the hot day with temperatures in the
90s when the dog
became obsessed with something in the bushes.

When she refused to move on, Gomez investigated and
discovered a box full of
3-week-old orange tabby kittens that were frightened and
hungry.

One of the abandoned kittens escaped before shelter staff
were summoned to
the scene, but Angel tracked it down and Gomez handed it
over to safety.

An 'Angel' makes a rescue

Angel, a pit bull-boxer mix, was rescued by the humane
society recently
after her previous owners were forced to leave her behind
when they moved.

On one particular day while taking an afternoon walk with 2
volunteers from
the shelter, Angel picked up a scent from some bushes.

She dragged her walkers to the area of the scent where they
soon discovered
six 3-week-old kittens, bright as a bunch of oranges,
huddled together in a
box.

When human society staff were called to the scene, one
kitten escaped but
that did not stop Angel making one more rescue.

She led one of the volunteers to the wayward kitten where it
was safely
reunited with its brothers and sisters.

Angel is a sweet, playful dog who can now add hero to her
repertoire.

If you would like to adopt Angel, foster the 6 rescued
kittens, or donate so
other dogs and cats can be rescued, please call 775-856-2000
or email

Good doggie
You hardly hear of anything nice about a pit bull or boxers.
