Thanks everyone for their kind words when I posted a few days ago.
Bubbas has been diagnosed with malignant histiocytosis. (A good layman's
description can be found he
http://www.xs4all.nl/~gvdt57/histiocytosis.html). Basically it's a rare
very aggressive form of cancer that is nearly always fatal. We've been
given a prognosis of days to weeks for Bubbas to live. He's comfortable,
on a morphine patch and is being given anything that appeals to his
appetite, as he's not eating well. I can't even begin to tell you how
hard this is, he's the first dog I've had since I was a kid and just fit
in so perfectly with me, and the cats and just made my day whenever he
saw me, he'd wag his tail and just get so excited. I don't know what I'm
going to do. Everyone, hug your pets and let them know how much you love
them, you just never know...

Love,
K

Karen, I am so sorry to hear this. I really, really feel your pain. I don't
know how but I know you will get through this. Memories are forever.

Thanks Mary. I haven't had the mental energy to post, but many of

yours
have been cracking me up and providing much needed levity.

I curled up with Cheeks about an hour ago but couldn't sleep. She's no
help because all she wants to do is play with the slinky tape measure
creature and kick the snot out of my covers. :') So here I am again.

Karen, you know that feeling when you're so full of so much that
anything you say will sound stupid. Bet lots of people here are
feeling that way. I hope it will help just a little to know that there
are people who really do know how you feel. I think there is some
weird little built-in genetic thing that makes us forget how much it
hurts to lose a loved one. If there weren't we would never risk loving
anyone again. Tonight, as sad as I am for you and Bubba, I feel
comforted knowing that he has someone like you to care for him now and
see him through this. Lucky, lucky dog. Don't think he doesn't know
it.

This was so sweet Mary. I think Bubbas is vaguely aware he has a
pretty good Mom. And I'm so lucky to have had the time with him
that I have. What you wrote is so true, and it's comforting to be able
to share my pain with people who understand what it truly means to
have a pet be part of the family.

Love,
K
