Sootie is the same she doesn't like visitors and even if she's just asked
to come inside and she see's there's someone there, she'll settle down on
the step until they've gone. on other but rare occasions she has jumped up
on a guests lap for some fuss but this doesn't mean that she'll do it next
time they come here. She does love it when they leave their shoes in the
hall. She will lie down among them revelling in all the different smells.

Judith

That's an idea. I'll ask visistors to leave shoes in the hallway.

litter robot. And of course the fake little furry mice. But actual
physical cats? Not one sighting.

So I tell the folks about Scooter, the semi-brave one, and Nipsy, the

just took Baby off the street because the two people who fed her were
both leaving the neighborhood.

They don't believe me for a moment. After all, this is a 55+
development, and lots of folks around here have some sort of dementia.
At the very least, we all lived through the 60's. It's probably just
some sort of flashback, and a harmless one.

Sometimes I wish that my cats were more like my friend Serene's cats.
Four of the six come out when company is there, probably more out of
curiosity than any real effort to prove that THEY exist.

No, I say, I really do have cats. Yes, yes, of course you do, and they
look at each other knowingly. But someday I'll prove it to them.
Someday Scooter will walk out of wherever it is that he's spying on
us, and will reveal his pretty face for all the world to see.

But apparently it won't be today.

They're all so weird.

By weird, do you mean your guests or your cats ? :-)

Jay

Do I have to pick just one? So far the visitors have mostly been
family and contractors. The family is weird, the contractors seem
mostly normal. Plus I had a cleaning person in.who seemed mostly
normal.

No, it's the cats. They specialize in being strange.

That's what cats do.

That's funny! When Persia (RB) first came to live with me back in 2001
(barged in is a better description) my brother came over several times.
He saw the bowls, he saw the litter box in the hall, a few cat toys.
He never saw her. He said the same thing, "Are you sure you have a
cat?" LOL

Hey! I'm 55 years old and I might be slightly forgetful but *know* I
when I have a cat! G

They're cats! And they're still adjusting to the big move. It will
take them a little time to complete the adjustment to the new house and
the new neighbors. Cute cat tail, er, tale, though.

You need some pictures of them on furniture in your house to show visitors.

Ann

They'll just accuse him of taking pictures of other peoples' cats.

One of my cats was so shy that the cat-sitter ransacked the house
looking for her because she hadn't even seen her and thought she might
have escaped or been sick or something. Sometimes, when she was feeling
very bold, she'd lurk cautiously at the top of the stairs and peer down.
This was when there were strangers in the house, and by strangers, she
meant anyone but me, even if they'd visited before. When I was there by
myself, she was a perfectly friendly and affectionate cat.

Cheryl

Buffy doesn't hide but she doesn't exactly run to greet people, either.
Persia (RB) was strange. Half the time she'd hide if someone knocked.
Other times she'd run towards the door as if to say, "I'll get it,
it's for me!"

I did that once. I was sitting for Serene's cats and suddenly realized
that she had a big grey cat like Nipsy and I hadn't seen him in three
days. It was a very small apartment and I searched everywhere but
couldn't find him. I called up Serene and she said not to worry, he
was definitely there when they left and I'd likely never find him. It
turns out that he knew how to climb into the center of the couch.

I have a friend whose young cat dug out a space in the center of the
box-spring mattress under their bed. They had some sort of work done -
contractors - and the cat decided it was time to dig her way into that
fabric and hide. Long after the guys had left the cat was nowhere to be
found but they could hear her. That's where they found her. Not
actually under the bed but practically *inside* it.

Don't you have more cats then you're allowed to? Maybe this is a blessing
in disguise.

Yes, that's true. But we have a cover story. Two of them officially
belong to my mother, but she's too old to really take care of them so
I'm just holding them. Together we're allowed 4 cats.

If you own your own house, why are you not allowed as many cats as you want?
In theory I could have any number of cats. 30 or 40 even, providing they
weren't a problem to the neighbours.

Boyfriend would say no to that idea anyway. Even one.

I can even keep pigs in my garden (don't want to, but I could) It says so
in my deeds.

In the U.S., there are a variety of codes. Most rural areas do not have
limitations on livestock, but many urban areas prohibit farm animals and
may have limitations on the numbers of cats and dogs. There is wide
variation in cities--even in the same county--where some cities are
zoned for specific purposes (industrial, single-family dwellings, mobile
homes, etc.) and other cities do not have any zones or restrictions at
all. Some restrict certain breeds of dogs. There are also Home Owners
Associations (HOAs) that have restrictions, some of which I consider
unreasonable. HOAs are not governmental units. They are corporations,
and residential buyers have to agree to their bylaws if they want to buy
in that are (an area which is often the equivalent of a subdivision or
even just a few blocks).

Yes, it depends on how things are zoned where you live.

It sounds like dgk is in a subdivision with a lot of homes. There may
even be an HOA. My HOA doesn't put restrictions on the number of cats
or dogs anyone can have, as long as the dogs are walked on leads and
picked up after and the cats aren't running rampant. Point is, they
don't want pets running all over the neighborhood.

There are occasionally stories in the US news about people who started
out with good intentions taking in strays. Then they're suddenly
overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals they've taken in. They find
they cannot afford to properly care for them. The animals wind up being
taken away... hopefully before the point of them being in such poor
health they cannot be rehomed.
