Best cat I ever had was a tortie, but I really like the coloring of Siamese (and similar) and Abyssinians. |

http://nextshark.com/theres-a-terrif...st-up-to-2500/ To be fair the "breed" are called Lylkoi and have been around a few years it's just a story too good for a lazy journalist not to use at Halloween I am not in favour of these cross breeds that keep showing up especially in the dog world although I must confess my cousin has a Springador (springer spaniel/Labrador retriever cross) who is delightful. Apparently, they combine the good nature of both breeds but they're not as big as Labradors (and also less inclined to eat everything) and don't have the long coats of springer spaniels so easier to groom Lesley Slave of the Fabulous Furballs |

I've never actually seen or read about anyone in the US having anything against black cats. Certainly not never refusing to adopt one. I didn't know about it myself until I got Sarsi and Dunzi and the lady I got them from apologised saying "I'm sorry they're only black" This made sod all sense to me they needed a home I had a home that needed kittens so what difference did it make what colour they were? Turns out in UK shelters its estimated black kittens on the whole take much longer to get adopted Lesley Slave of the Fabulous Furballs |

Turns out in UK shelters its estimated black kittens on the whole take much longer to get adopted Lesley Slave of the Fabulous Furballs It takes much longer for a black cat in the U.S. to be adopted. That is often associated with superstition ("bad luck"), but I don't even think that is the entire picture. Shelters usually will not adopt out cats shortly before Halloween (especially black cats) because of concerns that they will be abused. I think talk about abuse at Halloween is often exaggerated, but it certainly does exist. I have had two black cats, and both were/are wonderful. Holly was my first black cat. She was totally black with gorgeous golden eyes. She never had a single white hair anywhere on her body, even when she died at the age of 18.5. I changed her name as soon as I adopted her. She had been named "Jinx" for "bad luck cat," and I absolutely did not want her to be attached to a name like that. So I began to call her "Holly," which was short for "Holiday Cat." She was adopted in-between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now I have Nikki. Like Holly, she is totally black and is a little sweetheart. Both of my black cats were rescue cats. Nikki was rescued from a WalMart parking lot at a very young age. She was only 14-16 weeks old when I got her. She had been trapped/rescued by our local chapter of Ally Cats Allies. They do a wonderful job of caring for homeless cats. They have feeding stations for feral cats that are deemed unadoptable (the cats are spayed or neutered, then returned--known as TNR). Cats that can be adopted--like Nikki--are spayed or neutered, microchipped and receive vet care and innoculations before adoption. MaryL |

Apparently, they combine the good nature of both breeds but they're not as big as Labradors (and also less inclined to eat everything) and don't have the long coats of springer spaniels so easier to groom ---------- Labradoodles, a cross between Labradors and Standard Poodles apparently make good guide dogs. The Guide dogs association did try pure standard poodles some years ago, and very good they were too except for one thing. They tried to jump over obstacles instead of taking their blind owner round it as they are naturally nimble dogs, but crossing them with Labradors seem to have sorted this out: plus no shed hair to clean up. Cockapoos, cocker spaniel x miniature poodle are really popular here, but I'm not so sure they are a good idea. Both can have hereditary eye problems and golden cockers can have something called "cocker rage". One of my neighbours has a cockerpoo called Nelly. Golden cocker spaniel x white miniature poodle. Lovely to look at, a nightmare to own. Nelly is terrified of her own shadow, I speak to her often when she is walking past my house with her mum (5 years or so) and every time she wuffs at me like she's never seen me before. Plus she costs her owner 160 pounds a month in medication for her various ailments, one of which is grand mal epilepsy. So that cross didn't work out. I asked her mum where she got her from. . I pretty well know everyone in my area who breeds any kind of pedigree dogs ethically, including cocker spaniels and poodles, and it's none of them. It's a backyard breeder jumping on the cockapoo bandwagon. Grrr. whereas Lennie only apparently impregnated the most important poodle-girls in the world according to Rita. Actually, it's true. Lennie was a big-shot show dog stud dog once, but once the opportunity came up for his breeder to let him go at 6 years old to a home like Rita's, of course she did. At the time Rita could exercise him herself. Being a Kennel Club approved judge, I can still see how lovely Lennie once was. His movement is still perfect but he has been alllowed to get too fat. working on this. He is out walking every day for a mile or more (myself or Mary) and he gets 3 miles on Saturday (myself and Claire) but we can't keep up with his treats :-( Tweed |
