Default Buffy Doesn't Know What to Think

A few months ago, when it was still very hot outside, I had to have a
technician repair my central AC unit. Needless to say this disturbed
Buffy. She hides at first but, being a cat, she gets curious.

That guy was in the house, then he was outside the house, then back in
the house. After a while she got over her shyness. He pulled the
"magic" stairs down to get to the attic which totally freaked her out.
(Where did those come from?!) When he was going over the paperwork she
wound up winding around his ankles.

Today a technician came out to repair my cable connection since I
couldn't get online. Same scenario. First he was inside, then outside,
then back inside. She hid, then got curious. She could see him behind
the house from the window in the den. What's that guy doing?! Do you
know he's there?

When he came back inside she scooted into the bedroom. Whoosh! But
again, curiosity got the better of her. She didn't wind around his
ankles. She just walked around the living room meowing.

He's long gone but she's still suspicious and still being very vocal.

Buffy does not like her routine to be disrupted. Hey, it's no picnic
for me, either, but I didn't meow at the guy.

I love reading stuff like that. Cats are just so weird. You know,
there are really only two kinds of cats:

1) Curiosity Killed The Cat
2) Scaredy cat

That isn't exactly accurate since most cats fall somewhere between
those two poles. Scooter, however, is right in the middle and can't
make up his mind. Some loud noise, some sudden movement, and he's
gone. Swoosh. Stop. Come back to look at what it was.

It happens over and over. First instinct is to flee, and he has to
find out what it was about. My other cats just all flee. Espy (rb) was
all curious.

Buffy sounds about 2/3 Scaredy. That's a good survival mechanism I
think.

Cats are all so different. Sudden noise will startle Buffy even if no
one else in is the house. And please don't ring the doorbell. She runs
off. Then, though, in the case of these technicians, she does get curious.

It happens over and over. First instinct is to flee, and he has to
find out what it was about. My other cats just all flee. Espy (rb) was

Buffy is a guard cat on top of being a scaredy cat. She's like "Is
that guy still here? I'm checking out the house for you, momma. I'm on
the alert!"

She's an orange stripey sweetheart. She'll probably also keep me awake
all night tonight. She did after the AC repair man was here. It was as
if she thought he was still somewhere up in the attic. She did not
sleep. Therefore I did not sleep.

Methinks I have a slightly deranged guard cat.

Bless her. Sootie doesn't like loud noises and if you sneeze she thinks
she's being shouted at. The other night she was on her towel with the
catnip when DH had a sneezing session, she meowed and stomped across the
room muttering and grumbling, as if to say that it's bad when a cat can't
relax with her nip without being shouted at. It was a proper strop she had.

Judith

Awww, poor Sootie! How dare DH sneeze and disrupt her time with the
catnip on her towel?

I know what you mean. Buffy startles easily. I'm sure it has something
to do with the bully cat Frankie. I constantly reassure her, there's no
mean boy-cat here to beat up on you or keep you from your food. This is
your house.

Of course, Judith, I'm human, you're human, your DH is human. We
occasionally sneeze. We don't have to be sick to sneeze from time to
time, either. (Neither do cats, BTW.)

I've noticed I never sneeze just once. I always sneeze three times. So
I say to the cats, hey! Be prepared for a couple or three sneezes. And
don't take it personally.

I think than when one person lives with a single cat, they get used to a
quiet life. Boyfie was upset when I had to get a builder in last month and
also yesterday when I had to get him back.
I have a leaking bay window and it wasn't cured the first time. Maybe not
this time either. Leaking bays are notoriously difficult to diagnose where
the water is coming in and the builder suggests I get a flat roof specialist
in if this doesn't work. Which will mean someone else coming to panic him
yet again.
He panics even when he knows the visitor well so a builder is very difficult
for him.
He's the frightenedis (new word) cat I ever had. Kitty Farmcat brought him
here and she would tell him "get a grip" but who knows what happened to him
before he got here? I don't have a clue.
I know why Kitty FC came here.. she was bitten by the new dog. But she was
never scared ot people, quite the reverse.

Different with Boyfie. He's scared of everyone, even if he knows them.
Except me. He sees Claire twice a week, he knows her well and she fed him
every day for ages but he still tries to head to the hills if she visits. I
refuse to let him do it. So he rushes upstairs to his bed to get away from
her.

Fortunately, she is not offended. She knows what he is like.

Cats are just weird. All of mine are, at the least, cautious with
strangers. No, that's wrong. Scooter is cautious, the rest just take
off.

GLyN is sensitive to odd sounds as well.

It's taken over 3 years to get him used to my 'cough', or a sneeze.
He also HATES the sound of a 2 litre bottle of soda (fizzy water)
being opened.

But I can now, at least, clear my throat when he's lounging on my
chest without needing a trip to the Doctor for myself.
