That was a *really* good rendition of his classic hit. Usually I don't
care for live performances over recorded ones, they're usually not as
technically perfect - but this was about as perfect as you can get!
Thanks for posting the link, Jill.

Almost as if he'd done it in a studio. I find it funny the drummer has a
drummer G Then he gets up there and cuts loose. Wow is all I can say

Usually live performances are indeed worse than studio recordings, but there are
exceptions. This "In the Air Tonight" is a very good example. Another example is the
entire "The Thieving Magpie (La Gazza Ladra)" live album by Marillion. Although not
recorded at *one* live performance, but at several, all the songs inside sound much
better than their studio counterparts.

I've always much preferred studio performances over live ones, too -
but not everyone agrees. I remember years ago hanging out with a couple
of friends, trying to decide what to listen to, a studio recording or
a live one, and I chose the studio album. One of the girls (not really
a friend, more a friend of the other girl) said snottily, "Which would
you rather do, sit in your room listening to a record, or go to a concert?"

Tt the time, I would have preferred to go to a concert (I'm not so sure
about that now), so I conceded the argument and we put on the live record.
But years later, I realized I could have said, "Well, you're right, I'd
rather go to a concert. But most of the time, I don't have the benefit
of actually being at a live performance, so if I have to listen to a
record, then I'd rather enjoy the benefits of a good studio recording."

That woulda showed her!

By the way, I always thought Phil Collins was saying "I can feel it
coming in the OTHER NIGHT." My American ears didn't catch the word "air"
in a British accent. But then I bought the album that song was on (I
forget the name of it, but "Land of Confusion" is on it, and also, that
song about the guy trying to score some drugs, forget the name of that,
too). Since "in the air" is in the title, that was the end of that
misunderstanding.

It's funny, but when Brits sing I always think they sound "American"

Yes, that's the problem. Because his accent wasn't obvious, I was
automatically interpreting the words as though they were sung with
an American accent, so I didn't correct for the accent difference.

Example - if I heard someone say "fight" in a song, and I assumed they
were American, I'd think they were singing about an argument, possibly a
violent one. If I then learned that the singer was Australian, I would
realize they were referring to destiny.

Joyce

PS - Even with a British accent, "air tonight" doesn't sound much like
"other night", but I wasn't paying close attention.

So do we (at least for the majority of British pop singers).

I also think they sound like crap.

What is really bizarre is the number of amateur singers around here who
try to sing in American accents when they aren't even being paid for it.

Why do you think they sound like crap? And who are these people?

It's not only singers, it's amateur dramatists as well -
especially child actors.
