breeder to get one. You may love cats but having one in the
shelter killed just so you can get a purebred is pretty sad.

True, so true. After all, this is the sequence one always goes
through
when obtaining a purebred cat:

1. Get purebred cat from breeder.
2. Take cat home.
3. Go to shelter.
4. Obtain rescue cat.
5. Shoot rescue cat.

In this way, obtaining a pedigree cat *necessarily* leads to the
death
of a shelter cat. I think we can all agree on this.

Steve.

About 20 yrs ago, the Boat People from Laos, Vietnam, and other
southeast Asia immigrated here to southern California by the tens of
THOUSANDS. These (lucky) people would go to local animal shelters
and get cats and dogs ... as many as they could carry. They would
take them home and ... cook them ... for food. This went on for
several years until some animal shelters and pet protection groups
caught on. The old joke used to be "what do you call a Vietnamese
walking several dogs on a leash? Ans: A rancher"

Put sun block on a cat's ears? Huh? I've never heard of such a
thing.

Yes, I just read an article about that. Just as with human beings,
cats without much pigment in their skin are more prone to
melanomas, especially in areas without much fur--the ears and
around the face. Doesn't have to be a white cat--just any cat with
pink skin in the more exposed areas.

Is this phenomenon more prevalent in hybrid cats? Is there a place
that sells dark glasses and straw hats for cats? How about glasses
with a nose protector? Beach towel and umbrella?

All rescue centres do a home visit here, is that the case over
there too Sherry?

Here, pretty much every humane society or rescue org. is independent and
governed by its own Board of Directors. So, it just depends on which one,
individually, you're dealing with. IMO, the good ones do, and check vet and
landlord references also.
