Default I tried to pick Boyfie up.

Even though he sleeps on my knee every time I sit down I am still not
allowed to pick him up.
He panicked and struggled to get away. I thought after all these years he
might trust me to to pick him up. Not so.
I tried twice. The result was the same.
I wish he would realise he is safe here now.

Don't feel bad. Amber has been with me all of her life (18 years) and
still resists being picked up. She will sleep on my bed most nights and
sit next to me on the sofa (but not on my lap) but doesn't want to be
picked up. On the other hand Tiger has no problem with it.

I think this is more a cat-personality thing than anything to do with
his trust of you. Or at least it doesn't *have* to be about trust. I know
that Roxy trusts me a lot, but she won't let me pick her up, either. If
I do, she puts her paws on my chest and then pushes herself back as far
as she can, all while staring at me with an expression of, "When did I
ever give you the idea that THIS is OK?"

With Licky, it's a bit of both. If I try to pick him up, he turns into a
greased pig and is gone. This is the same cat who will go into a purring,
drooling trance when I pet his belly. But I'm only allowed to pet him in
certain places in the house. That's getting better, though. It's getting
closer to "there are certain places in the house where I'm *not* allowed
to pet him, but everywhere else it's fine."

Rhett and Bonnie are the same way. Even Scarlett doesn't like to be
picked up but she'll relax after a couple of minutes so i'd rather not
put them through the stress. I just wish I could because it would make
vet visits easier.

I've always been surprised that cats do generally allow people to pick them
up. I guess that just shows the extent to which they consider themselves to
be kittens. If a cat will sit on my lap and allow me to scritch its cheeks
and tummy, that's enough for me. Although I do like to pick up and carry
Dot and Buster.

Fugazi (RB) would never allow herself to be picked up, any attempt to
do so would transform her from a placid laid back cat to a furry fury-
armoured gauntlets would be needed. The only cat I've ever known who
was keen on the idea with Fugazi's sister Isis. Sarsi and Bonnie both
tolerate it (Bonnie less than Sarsi) for a minute or two then start
struggling and wanting to be put down

I can pick up Marlo but she isn't a fan, and Nipsy is easy and even
likes being held. Scooter? Not so sure, he's an odd one. More than
willing to show up when strangers are in the house but the first one
to bolt at some dropped can or other noise. I'm pretty sure that
picking him up is not an option.

Fortunately, Boyfie has the sort of temperament that doesn't enable him to
turn into a furry fury ;-)
Surprisingly, KFC never minded being picked up, even though she had quite a
temper she never objected. She was a very confident cat with lots of
self-esteem - that's probably the difference. She was always certain that
no harm would come to her, otherwise she could employ her million claws and
had no hesitation about doing so.
Boyfie thinks his claws are for hunting mowsies and scratching trees - not
for hurting his meowmie. He has never tried to scratch or bite even when
he's heading into his carrier for the dreaded TED visit with his cousin,
Tigger.

I do feel a bit bad, tbh. I've had him since 2003 but still he is scared to
let me pick him up. On the other hand, we've made great strides since then.
It took months to even get him into the house.
Now he insists on having his meals at set times and I cannot sit down before
he is on my knee within a couple of minutes. I never thought *that* would
happen. It has taken quite a few years to get to that stage, though.

The current cat that visits me (belongs to my landlords Son)
will willingly jump
in my lap, and will allow me, and me only, to pick him up, but
won't be tolerate
more than about 30 seconds.

His name is GLyN (short for Gato Loco y Negro, and you need to
understand
Spanish).

No comprendo, Senor[ita?] - but I think it means "Mad Black
Cat" - am I right?
