White Cats
I was talking to someone the other day about my new white cat and she asked
me if she was deaf. I said no and she said that most white cats were. I have never heard this before, is it true? Jeannie |

Jeannie Not really most of them, but a high percentage of blue-eyed white cats are deaf; and also odd-eyed cats deaf in the one ear that's on the side of the blue eye. . The genetics involved are quite interesting. You can type in "white cats deaf" as search words on google and several sites will come up on the subject. Sherry |

No, not most white cats. There is a genetic association in blue-eyed white cats with deafness, but that doesn't even mean that most blue-eyed cats are deaf. If your cat doesn't have blue eyes, she is no more likely to be deaf than any other color of cat. |

Some are. Esp. if they have odd colored eyes - not the same color as
eachother. Cathy -- "Staccato signals of constant information..." ("The Boy in the Bubble") Paul Simon "Jeannie" wrote in message ... Many blue-eyed white cats are deaf. The gene that produces the white coat and the blue eyes can interfere with the development of the cat's inner ear so that they are congenitally deaf. The white cat I had as a child had good hearing (she could hear a can being opened a long way away) and I think most white cats have normal hearing. When the fog came in on little cat feet last night, it left these little muddy paw prints on the hood of my car. |

Hi Jeannie,
As far as I know...only white cats with pink eyes are deaf. A lady who owned a blue eyed white cat told me. You can check on the internet, under ' white cats'. Jude "Jeannie" wrote in message ...
