Default How to Get a Cat to Follow You Around

1. Buy a 10 lb. bag of Feline c/d.
2. Carry it in from the garage.
3. Watch the cat follow you (nose twitching) towards the pantry.
4. Decide it better be kept in the garage.
5. Watch the cat follow you to the garage door.
6. Decide maybe the garage isn't the best place for the bag of c/d
(squirrels, etc.)
7. Watch the cat follow you around while you try to decide where the best
place is for a bag of c/d.
8. Get amused by the cat following you around.
9. Carry the bag into the TV room to show Mom how she follows the bag of
food! LOL
10. Decide the food goes in the master bath closet.
11. Watch the cat try to open the closet door.
12. Feed the cat 1/2 a can of chicken c/d and watch her scarf it down.
13. Watch the cat try to open the closet door.
14. Make note: buy a plastic bin to store the dry c/d in.

Why buy? Just use those plastic bins that cat litter comes in! Just
make sure that they get fully latched less Weebs' Precious Persia get
into it.

It's amazing how you can control a food-orientated cat with food. This
wouldn't work with Miranda, though.

Her litter comes in jugs with a screw-top They aren't big enough to hold
10 lbs of kibble! Even if they were, I can't really use something that has
to be lifted to pour out the food. Mom will have to feed her when I'm in
the hospital for my surgery even though it will only be a couple of days.
(I won't be doing any heavy lifting while I recuperate, either.) The
container has to be such that you can scoop out a 1/4 cup measure at a time.
I've seen containers that have a "fold back" lid that snaps shut; I hope to
find something along those lines.

Yeah, but if it opens on the top the food can just be scooped out like I do
now. No lifting required. I bought the 10 lb. bag of c/d for economic
reasons but I don't want it to get stale. The biggest bag the feline x/d
(discontinued) came in was 4 lbs. It was heavy plastic and had a zip-lock
top. The 10 lb. bag of c/d is your standard heavy paper bag. There's no
good way to seal it.

I'd get one of those clear plastic containers with the while plastic
screw tops they have at the grocery store. One big enough to hold her
food for a week or two and big enough to leave a 1/4 cup measuring
scoop in it.

Then I'd find or buy another plastic container to put the rest of her
bag of food in. You could leave it on the floor or sitting on
something in the garage and just scoop food from it into the smaller
container when it empty. No lifting.

What I do sometimes since I have the extra freezer space, when I get a
big bag of dry food that might spoil. I transfer it all into gallon
plastic freezer bags and store it in the freezer. Also keeps the
critters out.

Charlie insists that I buy five pound bags of food for the cats in as
many different flavors as possible. (Nutro only, or an occasional bag
of Iams-my rule) Then he mixes them together so they won't get bored.
And complains about the cost of cat food.

Same for Kayla, and its really silly and expensive buying 5 pound bags
of food for her.

He has a special cupboard for them in the garage with labeled sealed
plastic containers of the premixed food. Compulsive? No much.

We won't get into the rules for their snacks. Dan and Harri know
about the shrimp.

Dog get two treats when she goes into her crate at night. They are
cut into cubes so she can't wolf them down all at once. And three ice
cubes.

As you can imagine, its hard to keep her out of her crate in the
evening. She loves to go to bed.

I bought a couple of plastic containers like that at PetsMart (when I had
separate food for Da Boyz as kittens). I think they hold about 15-20 pounds
of dry food (which you can get at a discount in the larger bags, but you
have to be able to keep it fresh). I keep it on the floor of the pantry so
I can just "scoot" it out with my foot, lift the lid (which hinges all the
way back so it's easy to fill and scoop out), then scoop out the amount I
need (I keep the scoop in the container on top of the food). Then I just
snap it closed and scoot it back in again with my foot. It looks like this,
but I think mine are bigger (this one says only 12 quarts):

I have a simlar experience the other day.

Rusty just starts eating dry Gastro food after years of canned food.
Gastro canned
hasn't come out yet. I put the bag inside a metal canister. I came
home one day to find the canister opened with a big hole in the bag
of food. I thought I probably
forgot to put the lid back on and Rusty likes the food so much he
helps himself.
I suspect he gorged himself as he lost his appetite for a day
afterwards.

Later I heard a big crash while I was on the computer. I rushed to
find Rusty had flipped the lid on the floor to get to the food again.
Then I put a jug of cat litter on top of the canister to weigh it
down. Still found Rusty sniffing around it. He must really likes the
food. I probably will have to put the canister in a room and close
the door.
Good thing Rusty only knows how to open sliding door and the cabinet
door under the kitchen sink.
Anyway, I am just amazed Rusty knows how to flip the lid off the
canister.
