When my family first moved back to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1976, my father initially refused to have an air conditioner, as he tended to find most air conditioning too cold (he later changed his view when his book collection started mildewing). One hot, sticky summer day, I opened the refrigerator and our kitten hopped inside and curled up on top of the whole watermelon at the bottom of the fridge.
