Boyfriend was asleep on my knee yesterday afternoon when he decided he
wanted to go upstairs to his bedroom, which was fine by me but he came back
downstairs after a few minutes. I thought he'd changed his mind but when I
next visited the bathroom I discovered that he'd pooed in the bath. Despite
he could have walked to the back door which was nearer and asked to go out.

So.. I thought OK, it's a one off. Overnight is OK, afternoons are not.

This afternoon, after he had his tea, he went upstairs and returned after a
few minutes again. so I thought I would check the bath. Yep. He'd pooed
in it. When I went to check it he followed me upstairs. One look at my
face when I came out of the bathroom made him decide to go back downstairs.
I've never told him off about this but today I did. I told him a low
growly voice that he was a dirty, dirty boy and made him go outside. I
never speak to him other than kindly so it shocked him.
I am up to him using the bath overnight if he has to, but just strolling up
the stairs during the afternoon to use it is a no-no.
I've tried everything to get him to use a litter box. He won't. When he
had his bad operation he had to be kept in for two weeks so he used the
bath. He had to. I think that started his idea that the bath was a great
place to poo in.
I'm not having afternoon bathpooing though. Pretending to go up to bed, and
then sneaking into the bathroom..
He's likely to lose his freedom to go upstairs during the day.

I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Can you keep the bathroom door closed during the day?

Just had the same idea. Too late for today.
But, if he decides to poo inside the house, I'd prefer he uses the bath. If
I lock him out of the bathroom? I don't want him to poo on my carpets.
He is very well aware not to use the bath if I am home and can let him out.
I've told him that he will be spending a lot of time in the conservatory if
he ever does it again in the afternoon. Like overnight. It's not too bad,
but not like his bedroom.

Personally, I wouldn't bother him about it. If he's ever stuck indoors
because of weather, or becomes old and doesn't go out as much anymore, you
might well be glad that he likes to use the tub.

I'm not bothered about it until he decides it's easier during the afternoon
to go upstairs and use the bath instead of asking to go out when I'm right
there to open the door for him.
I am very happy for him to use the bath overnight if he cannot wait until
morning. It's easy to clean up. I am not happy for him to jump off my knee
in the afternoon, go upstairs, poo in the bath, come downstairs in 5 minutes
and ask to go out. What's that about?
Anyway the bathroom door is now closed during the day. He did try it again
but when the door was shut he asked to go out.
I was a bit worried about it in case he decided to decorate my carpets in
other rooms instead. He hasn't.
He's getting older now so I expect this sort of thing and having to keep
him in for a long time after his dreadful operation has reinforced his idea
that the bath is acceptable.
Which it is. For emergencies. Not because you are having a lazy afternoon
;-)
