Oh well, it's too late to eat anyway but now I'm starving! Jill That menu sounded good! Especially the strawberry shortcake! I crave hot dogs once in a while; too. I buy Oscar Mayer fat-free hot dogs (probably full of all kinds of other icky things, but at least there's no fat)and turkey chili. Turkey chili is pretty good actually. I had ... a kosher hot dog split and grilled on a steamed bun! And french fries done in peanut oil but unlike the ones on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, these were crispy! Very little salt on them, totally delish. I am a hot dog purist. I eat them plain on a bun--and not very often. Happy 4th, chica. I don't put anything on a hot dog, either. I had to run to the store to find good old Oscar Meyer hot dogs but the only buns I could find were Wonder Bread unless I wanted to drive 5 miles. I microwaved a hot dog and had about 5 potato chips. I was in heaven I am supposed to be asleep. Thinking of calling a cab to take me to/from the doctor tomorrow. Listen to the soundtrack from 'Meet Joe Black' (Thomas Newman) about Peanut Butter... I'm right about there Jill The food at last nights party was wonderful. Tri-tip, short ribs, burgers, hot dogs, etc. And this morning I think Vicki is going to wonder what to do with all the left over buns. Everyone was eating the burgers and dogs without them. Either South Beach or lazy. Oh, I'm delighted to say that her new dog loved the party. Her name is Karma. A brindle and white Bull Mastiff And I had an amusing conversation with one of daughters friends the new dog. Dog has not yet been "fixed". The friends says "well, it would be stupid to breed her, Vicki really has to have her fixed." I say, "I'm Mom, I can't tell her things like that. She thinks I'm being bossy" Friend says "Well I sure can" Jo Jo |

Yowie Thank you, Yowie. I hope your fourth of July is also a good day, even though it isn't a national holiday in Australia. =o) I have my spareribs marinating and the crust made for my apple pie. Can't get much more American than Apple pie. Melissa Except Apple Pie didn't originate in America. IIRC pie-making skills, along with apple seeds, came over with the Pilgrims. I wonder about hot dogs. (snip) I believe hot dogs are American. I seem to recall reading they were introduced at the 1930-something world fair in Chicago. Jill No, well before that. They were being sold at resorts around the turn of the century. The expression "hot dog" was in the 1900 OED! Tthe name "Frankfurter" suggests German origin-- and "Wiener" suggests Austrian. The German-speaking immigrants certainly favored sausages. It might be one of the many things that came over from the old country, and over time, lost all resemblance to what it originally was, and became *American.* Theresa Stinky Pictures: http://community.webshots.com/album/125591586JWEFwh My Blog: http://www.humanitas.blogspot.com Ah, this is the "event" I was thinking of: 1939 - Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), thirty-second President of the United States, and his wife, Eleanor (1884-1962), wanting to introduce something truly American to the visiting King George VI (1895-1952) of England and his queen, served the royal guests Nathan's hot dogs at a picnic at their estate in Hyde Park, New York on June 11, 1939. The press made a great deal about the hotdogs, and the picnic menu made the front page of the New York Times: MENU FOR PICNIC AT HYDE PARK Sunday, June 11, 1939 Virginia Ham Hot Dogs (if weather permits) Smoked Turkey Cranberry Jelly Green Salad Rolls Strawberry Shortcake Coffee, Beer, Soft Drinks The King was so pleased with "this delightful hot-dog sandwich" that he asked Mrs. Roosevelt for another one. And now I'm *craving* hot dogs! I don't even have any, nor any sausages, weiners, frankfurters nor any of the above. Oh well, it's too late to eat anyway but now I'm starving! Jill |

Scared Persia to death; sounded like thunder LB has never been afraid of thunder, in fact she sits in the window to watch the lighting (as long as there's no hail). Sammy, OTOH, heads for cover, usually under the bedspread. Working nights I wasn't home for all the fireworks (supposedly illegal within the city limits, but you sure couldn't tell as people have been setting them off for a week). From what I saw they didn't faze Sammy. Sammy has heard the artillery on post all her life, so maybe that's why. This time it was LB and Spot who were hiding from the loud noises, while Sammy pretty ignored it after hearing it a couple times. Poor Spot, she wanted to hide under the bed, but LB wouldn't let her. Spot ended up in the bathtub - took a while for me to find her, too. -- Steve Touchstone, faithful servant of Sammy, Little Bit and the Evil Spot with loving memories of Rocky (RB) [remove Junk for email] Home Page: http://www.sirinet.net/~stouchst/index.html Cat Pix: http://www.sirinet.net/~stouchst/animals.html |
