Default Pseudomonas Treatment with one Kidney

Hi all,
Our five year old kitty, Sammy, just had a kidney removed at the end
of November. It was totally destroyed...filled with pseudomonas.
He was on amikacin for a week and that seemed to clear
everything. He supposedly has asthma (chronic bronchial infection,
mystery cross-over cough that goes away when on an antibiotic)...has
had struvite crystals and had way too many drugs of all sorts. Since
Christmas Sammy has had a stuffed nose and we've been concerned.
Suddenly yesterday he started throwing up, today he has diarrhea. Our
other cat, Petra, has had the runs since Sammy's operation. Anyway,
they are now both on a med. for the runs, metronidazole, and Sammy is
back on amikacin because his nasal swab from two days ago
showed...pseudomonas again. Gads. With one kidney the amikacin is
dangerous. Apparently there is an old drug our vet used in the late
70's that might work . We're waiting on some more test results before
going that direction. Bottom line----does anyone have any experience
of anything like this or have any ideas of drugs or treatments that
might work? He's in a delicate spot and of course we love him a lot.

Pseudomonas is very resistant to many antibiotics. Has your vet done a drug
sensitivity on the Pseudomonas? It is important to know what antibiotics
might be appropriate. If your cat has repeated Pseudomonas infections he
might need to be on antibiotics indefinitely and/or be on a mixture of
antibiotics. Unfortunately Pseudomonas can be quite difficult to cure.

Good luck with your kitty.

Hi and thanks!
Yes, we should get another sensitivity test back today. He's been on
so many drugs in his life that---well, it's not good. I was hoping
there might be something amid the articles on Feline HIV and cancer
about some kind of immune system boosting we could do. Of course it
doesn't look like there's a lot of consensus. Ack.I'm going to ask our
vet to check with the specialists at the clinic where Sammy had his
operation---internists, oncologists and holistic vets among them---see
if someone has an idea. I'm willing to try multiple things as long as
they don't fight the drugs or harm him in any way, obviously

I wish I could give you more of an answer--you might want to try calling
Cornell University Veterinary consult service. It costs $55. Here's their
website: www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/camuti.htm

Hope this helps. I've never used it but have heard from other people that
it's a really service.

Good luck with your cat--it's so worrysome when they're sick.

Hi Bonnie,
Nice to see you around )

I hate it when I don't understand what something means, especially
when it concerns my cat's. Would you mind explaining what a
Pseudomonas is please?

I can see that it has something to do with being antibiotic resistant,
but I still don't understand the term itself.. I would be most
grateful if you could enlighten me please?
TIA,

Hey Sheelagh! Good to see you posting, too. I've been lurking but have
been pretty busy.

Pseudomonas are a type of bacteria that are commonly in the environment.
They are very resistant to antibiotics--only certain antibiotics will work
and sometimes patients undergoing treatment for Pseudomonas have to be given
higher doses than normally done. An antibiotic sensitivity involves using
various antibodies at different dosages mixed with a solution of the
bacteria and seeing which dose of various antibiotics works best to keep the
bacteria from growing.

Hope this makes sense!

Take care and have fun with all your fuzzy masters!

Bonnie
