Fat cats

My indoor cats are pretty fat. They hat pretty big flappy guts. I
let them free feed dry food because I work odd erratic hours.

1) How dangerous is it for them?

Is there a way to let them continue to free feed and loose weight? I
know I hate dieting.

There are dry cat food products designed for the not-so-active or overweight
cat which can be bought at nearly any major grocery store. (I hate dieting

You could try a diet food, and only offering the suggested quantity--but only
if they *like* it. You can't afford to have them stop eating for any
reason--fat cats are more prone to hepatic lipidosis and it's important they do
eat every day.
It would be really good if you could induce them to exercise more too. Maybe a
"laser pointer" workout every evening?
