That really is one of the odder things I've read lately. I suppose if
you live in a no-pet apartment and want a cat, this is the next best
thing. I wonder if they franchise?

That's nothing compared to having your own cat to develop a
relationship with. Probably a lot of them don't know what they're
missing!

I think a lot of them know exactly what they're missing, and that's
why they go to the cafes.

You can find them all over Japan, and yes, it's largely for people
(mostly women) who want, but for whatever reason can't have cats.

There are dog cafes, too.

I have no objections to them, but I do worry about what happens to the
cats if/when the cafe decides to close. There was a really horrible
case a few years ago of a dog park in Japan (similar idea as the cafe,
but a park) that closed because of bankruptcy. The dogs were left
behind, and for weeks they were left unattended. When it was realized
the dogs were still there, some people tried to enter to save them,
but they were refused entrance (I can't remember if it was the
landlord that refused or the local authorities). Many of the dogs
starved to death and others developed serious medical conditions
because of malnutrition. I can't find the article online, but I did
save a hardcopy of it, I just have no idea where I put it.
