Lorelei update, Nov 14, 2010
Not a real lot of change in the past two days.
She did sleep with me last night, on a pillow right next to me. I rolled over sometime during the night, and my face was right near her. I woke up with Lorelei licking my nose. I just rolled onto my back, and went back to sleep. I think Lorelei must know not to disturb sleeping humans, because that was the only time she woke me up. When I got up, I gave her some canned food, and after she ate it, she went back into my bedroom. I got her out in the hallway, and I shut my bedroom door. A little while later, I looked for her, and found her in the basement again. So I went out to my garage and found a piece of wood to block off the basement. There is still a litter box in the bathroom, which she has never used. She's been lying on the floor of the dining room all day. At one point she was meowing to me, and I ALMOST managed to coax her into the living room. When I reached out to pet her, she retreated back into the dining room. I don't know why she seems scared to come into the living room; it's where I spend the most time, using my computer, and sometimes watching TV. When I got her her canned cat food, the can was almost empty, so I put some sardine on the plate. She didn't eat any sardine at first, but she came back just a little later, and ate all of it. I think she likes Fancy Feast better; the can was Salmon Feast in Gravy. It smelled good to me, unlike most canned cat food, although it smelled like tuna to me. When I pet her, or give ear scritches to Lorelei, she tends to roll over on her back now. She likes to have her tummy rubbed ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ^..^ "Life without cats would be only marginally worth living." -TC, in loving memory of the unmercifully, relentlessly, sweet calico kitty, Kenzie. After all, she has only been with you for a few days. Do you have any interactive toys, such as one of the "fishing pole" toys with a Play 'n Squeak mouse? Or even one of the toys without a pole. Here are some examples: http://www.playnsqueak.com/products_mouse.html If you use one of these, be sure to lock anything with string attached into a safe area whenever you are not "attached" to the other end! Duffy loves the Turbo Scratcher. Lorelei might like that, and she could then play with the ball with you in the same room. She would become accustomed to your presence. Here is one: http://www.amazon.com/Bergan-Turbo-S.../dp/B000IYSAIW Any toy with catnip is also a good motivator for play. In addition, take a look at the "boogie mats." Holly and Duffy both roll around in them as soon as I bring them out. You can add fresh catnip at any time. Here is a pictu http://catniptoys.com/Merchant2/merc...t _Code=308-2 All of these are available at a variety of places online, so you could do some comparative shopping. I even got my Turbo Scratcher at WalMart, although I haven't seen them at WalMart recently. Duffy completely shredded the round corrugated cardboard scratcher in the center, but refills are readily available. MaryL |

It sounds good that she has slept by you... Maybe with the basement door
blocked she will get use to the rest of the house and know how lucky she is to have found you.... Good Luck..... |

She's just bewildered because she's in a new place. You're doing everything right, giving her time to adjust and take it at her own pace. I agree about blocking access to the basement. She may feel safe there but she needs to be coaxed to feel safe in the upstairs spaces more. Keep up the good work and thanks for the update! Jill |

Was also wondering if Kenze spent most of her time in the living room and if
her scent was still strong there. Someone had a sig line about it taking forever to get all the hair off your couch aster a cat was no longer there. Bobble Yes, Lorelei was in the living room when I first met her...but I didn't see a computer in the house: it's probably in another room. You are likely correct in that Lorelei wasn't allowed in the room with the computer; I had not thought of that. Kenzie was not allowed on furniture when I got her, and it took me 2 YEARS to teach her it was OK to get on the couch. It wan't until I was out of work and at home all of the time that she really started getting up on the couch. Sometimes, fairly rarely, when I was watching TV, she would get up on the sofa, and sit in my lap. It was a real treat!
