You know: old style cast iron radiators. The furnace is 94 years old. It only works if the hot water stays inside. Overnight, a LOT of water leaked out. Poor Lorelei's litter box just happens to sit in the lowest spot in the basement; there was a lot of water, everywhere....but deepest, right where the litter box was. And, the water is COLD, sitting on the basement floor, too. I could see little wet cat paw prints, all around the margins of my new indoor pool. I moved her litter box to high ground, and started cleaning up the water, with a wet/dry shop vacuum. The only trouble is: there's no floor drain in my basement. So I filled the vacuum with water, and I couldn't lift it up, to dump it in the laundry tub. Water weighs 8 lbs. to the gallon, and the vacuum holds 6 gallons: 48 pounds. I can lift about half that, on a good day. Once or twice...maybe three times. A bag of kitty litter weighs 25 pounds, and I can get one bag home from the store, at a time. I need a pump, to pump the water up into the laundry tub. I got the leak fixed....temporarily. So, the furnace works, for now. I have heat. |

How turribul!! An rite wen yu needed thu lidderbocks!! I hopes this duznt happin agin! Sam Ah, the joys of old houses! Mine was converted to electricity, but a couple I know are trying to fix up a house that must be a bit over a hundred years old. I don't think the furnace is quite that old, but it's not new, and shut off during the reign of some previous tenants who didn't know or didn't care that those cast-iron radiators should have been drained before the house was abandoned to the frigid temperatures! That was a mess. And if your house (or other building, it also happened in a local church) is big enough, you can't get a replacement furnace locally. I once had a lovely apartment in a giant old Victorian house, and when the furnace went, a new one had to be ordered in from Montreal - almost 2,500 km - and took weeks and weeks and weeks to arrive. I have that same heat and had that happen. I vacced it up the stood by the
sink with a pan with a handle and dipped it out of the vacc a bit at a time. Where there is a will, thee is a way. Would not trade hot water heat for anything else. When it is freezing outside, you can find cats laying along the radiator covers that go over the pipes Loreli I hopez u gotted a treet for telling himself dere wazza proflem. One day I went into the board room to fix coffee and felt "sqwishy" underfoot. Sure enough, the beautiful carpet was saturated from a leaky radiator. When they tore up the carpet, it was found to be mouldy underneath. The whole room had to have new carpet. What a mess! MLB |
