Cat whiskers

Hi,

While curled up in my lap, I noticed that Patches, our sweet female white
and orange barn cat, had split ends. Her right side whiskers are full, long
and complete. Her left side whiskers are broken off about 1/2 to 1 inch from
her face and have split ends. Her companion, a tuxedo black male has perfect
whiskers.

Any comments.

Her companion is chewing them off. It generally happens with younger cats. She
also could have gotten too close to the fireplace on one side but they
generally just turn black and curly from heat.

Yup, several of my cats have enjoyed gnawing the whiskers off another. The
gnawee never seems to mind, for some reason. It generally begins as grooming,
then the whisker gnawing, and then some play fighting.

LOL I've never had any of mine do this. I can just picture it from
your description though.

Currently, Scottie gnaws Abbey's whiskers off and has done so since she arrived
3 years ago as a baby. He seems to prefer the over-the-eye whiskers rather
than the cheek whiskers. My late cat, Emily, used to chew the whiskers off my
late cat, Cory. She was his mom and did it since he was a baby. She preferred
cheek whiskers, though. Once, he had stubble whiskers on both sides, no long
ones, just little short half-inch whiskers on each cheek. After that, she
seemed to just do a few at a time so he always had some long and short
together.

I've been keeping Cristobel's whiskers in a little box.

I have some from nearly all my childhood kitties. I put them in my
photo albums.

I also have fur clippings and pawprint from Fluffy. He's gone now, but
it's sweet to open up his book and touch his fur every now and then.

I keep all the discarded whiskers in a small jar. I do the same with
discarded claws. I also keep any hair I brush off of amber in a ziploc
bag (large size). I have enough to make another cat!

how do you gather the discarded whiskers and claws? they discard
claws? i thought it was the claw sheaths. i see a lot of those on the
bathroom mat. it's dark.

Of course it is the claw sheaths that I collect. I don't clip my cats
claws (they wouldn't go for it). The whiskers just appear - usually on a
carpet.
