I am not a trucker, LOL. Like ugly backpacks, there are just some things
here I dig in my heels at and flatout turn down. Chains in that
category. Not afraid of heights. Just driving up there.

Wise woman.

I've installed chains on both cars and big rigs. Will NEVER do that
again. If a road is in such bad shape that chains are required to drive
it, then it's too bad for me to be able to drive safely.

A couple of dispatchers got very angry with me when I refused to run
chains-required roads, but the company safety department always sided
with drivers in those situations.

yep that was him. IIRC, he was born in Ok, but was moved to Calif as a
child. I know he lived for years in Bakersfield, Ca, as he and his
family were patients of the doctor I worked for part time while going
to high school.

The paraphrase is from his song, 'fighting side of me' where he sings
'if your running down my country, you're on the fighting side of me.'
It was written as an answer to Vietnam protesters, in the same theme
as Okie from Muskogee.

just as an aside, many credit Johnny Cash with turning Merle's life
around. Haggard was an inmate in Folsom prison when Cash made one of
his famous prison concerts. Supposedly, Johnny talked with a group of
inmates, and impressed Merle enough that he turned into a model
prisoner.

OT thread
Since you are obviously a country music fan....."Fightin' Side" is a
classic.
My fave of all time, and fave singer of that genre is this:

and for our Brit friends who may have considerable trouble making out
the lyrics

Speakers up.....

ah, one of my favorite Merle songs - right up there with Silver Wings

BTW, after my first post I goggled Merle and found a couple factual
errors about my first post. Nothing big, his family was from Ok, but
he was born in Bakersfield, and I had him as an inmate in the wrong
prison. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merle_Haggard

Not true, I-70 is in very good condition over the passes (hence the 4
seasons including construction here). They resurface every year, and
every other (I think it is) they take the 'surface' off and lay new
road.

However, if you mean "bad shape" as in bad weather... in winter, it
can be treacherous with ice and snow. Only rigs are required to have
chains, though some people have the for the cars, in case they get off
the road and stuck.

Smokie Darling (Annie) - who despises going over the passes in bad
weather. Last Friday, 16 April, the road was closed in both
directions because of a massive snow storm (we weren't up there,
twybi).

You should probably listen to your Mom. Just kidding, couldn't resist the
hair cut remark. So long as you are not bald on top, leave it long but,
when the top goes don't. JMO.

She knows. The cats can tell you if you listen. They can see the
Bridge. I don't know about religion and I have no idea of WHAT goes on
after we go but my Woo-Too is in touch with my Mom. I know that. Ever
since I got her after my Mom passed away she has been my connection to
Mom. I know, through her, that my Mom exists, that she loves us and
that she would like me to cut my hair.

So listen to to the cats. This does not mean you have to eat a lizard
if they give you one.

Default Math and Age (was: Disturbing News)

Oh no, now that I have to figure the money deal out, not much gets by me,
even if I have to ask which I have no problem in doing. Sometimes I wish I
had gotten more involved in that end of my life years ago.

Isn't that what people did who got those subprime loans?

When you are talking $, I understand that kinda math. They also
failed to relate to "balloon" other than inflated decoration, LOL.

Lots of people migrated from OK to the farmlands of California's
Central Valley during the dust bowl years - was he one of those?

sort of, that is his family made the move then. According to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merle_Haggard I was wrong when I said he
was born in OK. My biological mother's family made the move during the
depression, too. Lot's of those people ended up in Bakersfield. When I
was in high school back in the late 60's early 70's, most of my
classmates' families were originally from Oklahoma and Missouri.

BTW, I retired from the Army at Ft Sill here in Lawton, and ended up
just a few miles from the old family farm in Sterling, though the only
ties to the old farm is that my Aunt inherited the mineral rights and
gets a few dollars a year from some oil company.

Thank you. I know I should have snipped this, but it bears
repeating. There is NO PROOF that Alan is harming those cats in any
way. I met Alan last year, when he knew that there was a limited
time left for Christy, and that person would NEVER harm her beloved
friends. Please either find proof and contact the authorities or
stop maligning a person's reputation. In other words, either put up
or shut up.

I would hate to have to answer for all the times I told one of my
cats they
were retarded.

Just tonight Frank and I did a dance as I started setting up cat dinner.
I step left he moved into my way, by the time he moved out of the way I
went the same way so I told him we were both retarded. At least I am
fair.

Yep, I was referring to the weather. I love the roads themselves - they
were among the best-maintained I had to drive.

In general, if chains are required to go somewhere I just don't go there.

Having watched the two youtube videos,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFURD5dp_QU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QCHIZQmiOY

all *I* see is two cats who seem to be enjoying the outside, and male
voice that seems to hold them in some affection.

Since when was it a crime to let cats outside? When was calling a cat
'Retard' considered abuse?

I know that two youtube videos is hardly the 'whole story' but there
is nothing in those videos to suggest that the owner of those cats is
in any way abusing or neglecting them. They look like healthy happy
cats that have a good relationship with the person behind the camera
to me.

If folks have any concrete evidence that Alan is abusing and/or
neglecting the cats, then it needs to be reported to the authorities,
not posted about here. Despite personal opinions of him and his
character, posting to a public newsgroup implying he is an animal
abuser is innapropriate at best and libellious at worst.

Once again, thank you.

I have nothing but love for those little critters who own me (or at
least think they do)

Yes, thank you Pam.
Alan, they probably give you a lot of comfort and laughs I'll bet.
That's what they're there for. I thought of you on your plane ride to
Maui with Christy's ashes

The worst trip of my life was from the funeral home back to our home.
I had her remains in the seat beside me with my hand on them the entire
time. I kept talking like she was actually there.

I talked to her when I was spreading her remains in the waters of Maui.

For lack of a better term, I'm crying like a bitch as I type this.
I loved her so much.

That's understandable It's okay to cry, you need to get it out.

Whenever I come home from work these days, Puakea Makana (Gift of the pale
white flower) runs to meet me. Then comes Chloe, the retard.
Pua brought me a rather large lizard this afternoon, but Chloe saw fit to
take it.

It was a good thing. I'm not big on lizards.

See how the kitties love you and are trying to comfort you?
Bringing you prezzies.

Pronunciation key
Puakea = Poo ah kay ah
Makana = mah kah nah

I met my DH in Oahu in 1976, and I learned a nice word
Da Kine Pakalolo.

Did you get the pictures of The Get Together I sent you?
I could only find one set.
I hope they didn't make you cry harder. You're still in the denial stage of
grief.
It's going to take time, but there are people who do care about you.
Take care of yourself and the kitties will help you too.
Aloah

One story that was repeated to me was the one of her mother saying,
"Christine Ann. You're so ugly. Your hair is so straight."

That is unforgivable and makes her mother the ugly one. My parents
always told me I was sooo beautiful that I grew up believing it. I
still don't know if it's true or not, I doubt it, but I like to think it
is.

That is horrible (of Christy's mom). I understand first-hand how damaging
that can be, and it's a lifelong process to overcome it, at least for me.
I wasn't called "ugly", but I was called "selfish" and "cowardly" all the
time. Sadly, I still believe those things at heart, although I try not to.

On the other hand, it was really lovely of your parents to tell you that
you were beautiful, and as you can see, that has had lasting effects in
a good way. You say you don't know if it's true or not, but it sounds like
you don't really care whether there's some objective "truth" to it, because
your parents taught you to *feel* beautiful, and that's what counts.

Anyone who believes that child abuse doesn't cause lifelong damage is an
idiot!
