Default Embarrassing situation

Today was garbage day in my area, and I had a lot to put out. Sam
managed to slip out. One of the neighbours had installed a new gate
between two houses, but there was a gap underneath, which Sam headed for
- but he didn't fit! He still managed to elude me for a bit longer, and
when I grabbed him, he startled me by hissing - he's such a laid-back
cat; he never hisses or shows aggression. Then I realized he'd spotted
another rather more svelte black cat across the street who for some
reason annoyed him. He must have been familiar with him, too, since I've
seem him around a lot and am pretty sure which house he belongs to.

When I came back out, the neighbour cat was carefully sniffing the
clumps of grass Sam had been nibbling on.

From my own experience with an escapee, it seems they just sort of
forget they are house cats for a short time, or else they are just
freaked out by unfamiliar surroundings. I'm glad you were able to catch
Sam!
