as I did in Israel, especially Jerusalem. On an evening's walk, 30 or 40
would cross my path, and I could hear more lurking. A temperate climate, no
natural predators and a kind-hearted people who put out scraps had increased
the kitty magnitude. Though it's been 20 years since I've been there, I'm
told by recent visitors that the stray cat problem still exists; however,
with typical sabra ingenuity, the humane societies are putting birth-control
drugs in the food they leave for the strays. Rome too struck me with the
sheer number of stray cats, but in the shadow of the coliseum, the humane
society has a cat refuge where they are fed, housed and neutered. I live in
NJ, just across the river from NYC and I have seen only one stray in the
years that I've lived here, and now that I think about it, though I saw cats
on the streets when I was a kid growing up in NYC, it's been years since
I've seen one on the streets. Wonder why...Unka Sonam

I can explain that one...it's against Jewish Law to spay or neuter an
animal, as it would cause the animal "pain and suffering."

IMO, a little pain and suffering when they're kittens is worth a long and
happy life in the long run.
