Default two cats is better?

We are considering getting a cat.
Will a cat be happier with companionship of 2nd cat.
Is there an issue getting two cats?
Does it matter if they both male or female or a mix when both are nuetered
and spayed?
We lost our cat and to have enough cats for everyone in family to share I
thought 2 cats would be good.

Thank you for any thoughts.

I have two female cats (litter mates) that I got when they were 2 months
old. Because I was working full time and lived alone I wondered the same
thing. I've never regretted getting two cats at once, as it became very
clear they really enjoyed playing and wrestling together. They're nearly 8
yrs old now and I can't imagine how they'd react without the other around
(even though they continually vie for the "alpha cat" position!) If you can
get two kittens from the same litter (or near the same age), I doubt there
would be too much problem of them getting along, regardless of gender. I
hope it goes well for you and your family as it has for me!

I am not exactly subjective as I have seven but...
the last two I got are brother and sister and I never had so much fun.
They are really great to watch, they slept next to each other every
night for two months (and still do occasionaly). Even with the other
cats, they still are happier with playmates their age. Of course, I
had to get them spayed/neutered as soon as they were old enough, but
if you get two males or two females, you may be able to wait awhile.

Good Luck
