Pine Litter?

I've heard it discussed here before but never really thought about it. The
local grocery store is selling 7 lbs of pine litter for $2.99USD. I
usually buy scoopable litter comparable to Tidy Cats (but costs a lot less).

From what I understand cats can be finicky about litter so I'm wondering
whether or not it's worth taking a chance on buying the pine stuff because
it's so cheap. It's not like I'm running out of cat litter. I have plenty,
but that price is mighty enticing! Your thoughts?

It has been many years since I used it, so the formulation may have changed.
However, the pine litter I used was *terrible* for clean-up -- there would
be wet, spongy, difficult-to-clean places where urine had settled
(definitely not "clumped"). Yucks!! One time was enough, and I never used
it again.

I(we?) received a LitterMaid self-cleaning box last Christmas, which
pretty well ties us to a "premium" scoopable litter. (The box won't
work with non-scoop litter.) If I COULD use any kind of litter, I'd
still be a bit hesitant about the pine stuff because I'd expect it to be
rather light-weight, meaning much more trackable-all-over-the-house than
the heavier clay litter.

$2.99 is a good price for the 7-lb. bag, about 25% less than what I can find
it for lately. I got lucky and found the 20-lb. bags at a discount store for
$3.45... bought all three!

I agree with you MaryL..the stuff is nasty smelling and the cats didn't like
it either.

I don't use anything else. The stuff I use is in pelleted form (small
pellets). It's excellent. Great smell - easy to clean out litter boxes..
Last time I went round the Battersea Dogs' Home - it was what they use in
the cat section there. Longer lasting - works out cheaper than 'normal' cat
litter for me.

I have heard that pine oil is toxic for cats so I don't use the pine oil
litter. I use Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat for multiple cats - no dust to
speak of, clumps, no odor (thank heavens) - lasts at least 2 weeks with my
four (use 2 40-lb. bags between 5 litter boxes.

That's the reason I've never tried it also, Christine. I always heard
such dire warnings
about using Pine-Sol around cats. Though I am sure the Pine litter
isn't strong enough
to be toxic. I guess the *real* reason is that I have five cats, and
they *all* ATM
have perfect litter-box habits. You just don't mess with a good thing
when you've got five,
if they decide they don't like it, it could be disastrous.
I *have* been too sick lately to drag all the boxes out and wash them
as often as I should.
I bought some Nature's Miracle additive stuff that you sprinkle on
top. It really works well and
they don't mind it. It's too expensive really, IMO to use all the
time. I liked it because it doesn't
have that lingering, sickeningly sweet odor that Arm&Hammer litterbox
freshener has.

I've always used wood pellets for litter. In the beginning I used the
pellets that were actually sold for cat litter. But later I discovered
that heating pellets are heaps cheaper and started to use that instead.
The pellets dissolve into saw dust when they get moist - peed on. We
have a double litter pan - the upper has holes in the bottom and works
like a sieve, sifting the saw dust into the bottom pan, where one can
simply scoop it away. Poopies I pick up with a coupla pieces of toilet
tissue and toss into the toilet bowl. Easy peasy.
