Across the Equator (a Mouser Tail) part 1
The change of watch would be soon, but the creaking of ropes in the rigging
and the sighing of the wind in the sails punctuated the silence in the pre-dawn light aboard the Mouser. Below deck Persia was washing prior to starting breakfast. Cap'n Pine Cone had just used the litter box and was preparing for his morning briefing. Tanada was prodding sleepy cabin kits and bits awake. In short, it was a typical morning on the Mouser. Then the collision alarm went off. Humans and cats scattered to their emergency stations. The watch cats anxiously scanned the ocean around the ship looking for the cause of the disturbance. Captain Pine Cone ordered everyone to stay in place while a team of 1st Sergeant Huey's Marines searched the ship. After a while the claxon ended and the marines came back and reported that they couldn't find any reason for the alarm to sound. All hands were told to go back to their regular stations and schedule. An hour later, during first breakfast, the collision alarm went off. Again the humans and cats went to their emergency stations. Again the ship was searched and the alarm turned off. Breakfast finished with all the participants edgy and chattering excitedly about this new event in their lives. Speculation about who or what caused the alarm was running wild. Once more the alarm blared out. Once again the humans and cats went to their emergency stations. Once again the ship was searched and the alarm turned off, except that the alarm wasn't turned on. Cap'n Pine Cone asked Scotty and the engineering department to take a look at the system and see if they could find a cause for the repeated disturbances. After Scotty reported back, the captain had 1st Sergeant Huey place a guard on the alarm switch and called a meeting of the department heads. "Cats," the captain mewed. "Scotty reports that his department checked the system over and cannot find any reason why the alarm should have gone off." "That's right Cap'n," Scotty agreed. "Of course we'll go over it again if we can't find a breathing cause for alarm." Some of the department heads laughed nervously. Scotty had an active sense of humor, but it wasn't too appreciated right then. Right then, the alarm went off a fourth time. After all the humans and cats rushed to their emergency stations, the marines guarding the alarm system reported that no one was around other then themselves and the button had not been pressed. The human first mate, Jason, put on his diving gear and went over the side to see if he could find anything under water. An hour later, the meeting was resumed. "Jason says that he couldn't find anything underwater," Cap'n Pine Cone meowed. "We need to find out what is going on before some disaster happens. Suggestions?" respectfully submitted on behalf of the Mouser Pam S. |

If they are across the equator from Yowie and Flippy and Alfonze and Britta I would suggest they must be near Transylvania and friends of Barnabus (who was named for Barnabus Collins) have come to visit and are playing pranks. Julie and Barnabus the vampire (b)cat. |
