It might be an English thing, Gordon. I call them bats, too, although they
aren't anything like cricket bats or baseball bats.. Perhaps paddle is a
better word to describe them.

OK. Is Table Tennis the same thing as Ping Pong? Is that maybe why the
thingies you hit the ball with are called bats in one and paddles in the
other, or is it just a colloquialism?

hmmmmm, well maybe they DO use bats, but what they play in the
Olympics only has a passing resemblence to the ping pong I play ;-)
