cat has popping sound coming from one ear....constantly itching both ears
For over 2 years now.....my cat has has a poping sound coming from one ear
with brown stuff that gathers and her other ear is irratated with the brown stuff as well. I have tried cleaning them both with hydrogen proxide; alcohol; even warm water with epson salt. This brown just seems to come back. Also the worse ear is bent now from her constantly itching it. I have tried 3 or 4 different vets. The first one took a lab test. Subscribed an antibotic and and didn't know what the brown stuff was coming out of her ears. 2nd vet did the same. 3rd vet said that the cat has sensitive ears and subscribed prednisolene with styroids in it to keep her comfortable. He also said he saw a growth deep in the ear. He said the brown stuff was wax. To me, it just seems as though it mounts up too quickly. Has anyone else had a poping sound coming out of their cats ears and what helped? My other cat has the same irriations but not nearly as badly. Thanks in advance, Sue |

cat has popping sound coming from one ear....constantly itching both ears
My cat has had the same sort of thing for about a year. No mites -
just excessive wax and no infection. There is an ear washing machine that the vets have - Phil would know what I am talking about. It is supposed to clear up this problem and is said to work well. I haven't had to do that yet. The vet cleaned out his ears with Epi-Otic a couple of times in the office. I am to use the Epi-Otic once a week on the outer ear. Seems like the wax production has slowed down. Too much of the other stuff - peroxide, etc. can be irritating it even more and then more wax is produced. I don't know what you mean about the popping sound though. If it is a fungus, it would smell bad. Has anyone else had a poping sound coming out of their cats ears and what helped? My other cat has the same irriations but not nearly as badly. Thanks in advance, Sue My late cat Tiger had the brown wax problem for most of her life. I don't really remember any popping sound, though. She had been seen by numerous vets and I never got an answer about what it was. She had her ears deep cleaned many times and it would always come back, even if I tried to keep on top of it and clean the ears myself periodically. She didn't have fleas, it wasn't mites. Whatever tests they ran came back negative most of the time. One time one vet said it tested positive for some bacteria and she was given antibiotics but IT DIDN"T HELP. The poor cat lived with it for years. When it got really bad she would spend her entire day scratching her ears, causing dozens of little csabby sores to form on her head and around her ears. She'd get them cleaned out and it would come back evetually. One vet also said it was just wax and his opinion was "If it doesn't bother her, it doesn't bother me". I guess he missed my whole speech about how she was making herself bleed, was walking funny and cried in pain whenever she scratched. In the last few years of her life she did develop what looked like warts or pimples in one ear, probably because she had been battling it for so long. Her last cleaning was December 2005 and she passed away in March 2006. At the time of her death her ears were still in pretty good condition but I know that wouldn't have lasted long. Other people have posted about the same exact problem and I don't think any of us ever got a real asnwer from a vet about it. -- Liz |

I don't use any harsh cleaning chemicals so it's not that. The main cleaning
I do is vac, dust, clean bathroom and use the clorox quick mop on kitchen & bath floors. The vets have taken the brown stuff under their microscope/lab and have seen nothing. So from what they told me, I would think there would be no ear mites or else, you would've thought they would treat the ears for them. "Niel Humphreys" wrote in message ... Man, that sounds exactly like a chronic ear infection. Oral antibiotics
don't reach the ear well, did he have oral and ear drops? Some vets recommend steroids with the treatment to help open up the ear canal. Our cat had a chronic infection for a few months, complete with a crackling sound at times when he itched his ear. It's the waxy, pus stuff in there. The vet put him under anesthesia and got a deep culture, basically got a sample of stuff from the middle ear and sent it in. She also saw that the infection had reached (or started) in his middle ear and had taken away his eardrum. Anyway, I would try to find a very good vet who will get to the bottom of it. Maybe call the Humane Society or a cat rescue organization and get a recommendation. For Bear, we are looking at a huge, expensive middle ear surgery. The ear surgeon we consulted with said most times when one middle ear is infected, the other is too. Bear only has one, thank God. At the very least, your cat needs another culture. Our cat had a different organism in the middle ear than he did in the outer ear. The middle ear bacterial (staph) was resistant to the baytril drops we were using. Good luck. The rescue group had a cat who constantly had a lot of wax build up in her
ear. She has a polyp, I believe, and required surgery to remove it before her ear would clear up. We had the surgery done and she's since been adopted. Last we heard she's doing fine. The vet did say the cat had a polyp or small growth there. He said I could
go to a specialist to have it lasered out but that the cat was too old 11 to try to put her to sleep for the operation. I tried to look on the internet as to who does laser but couldn't find how to do it. I've tried ear antibotics and that don't work and like you said it could be because it is so deep down. What is so amazing is that 3 lab cultures couldn't find a thing. "Wendy" wrote in message . .. The rescue group had a cat who constantly had a lot of wax build up in her ear.
