Napping by the food bowl is not a good sign.

So cute

OMG - that poor staving kitty just doesn't even have the strength to make it
to the food dish! I suppose we'll be seeing you on Animal Cops: Houston
sometime soon!

I'll have to post a recent photo of Amelia. I'm afraid she's gotten to be
way too big also.

I really want to be able to put the kitties on a timed schedule, but
they're all accustomed to free-feeding. And since Nancy and I both work
such unpredicatable schedules, getting the cats on a feeding schedule
could be pretty difficult.

But I've got to find some way to help Amelia lose weight. Maybe I can
start walking her frequently - we both need the exercise!

Sammy was doing very well on her diet until we took in three extra families.
That caused my other cats so much stress they went off their feed and they
were losing way too much weight way too fast. I have to encourage them to
eat, and in doing so Sammy ends up with extra portions too (poor baby is a
stress eater I guess, I can relate! ;).

CatNipped

I would like to encourage you to try timed feeding schedules. Isn't there
some way that you and Nancy *combined* could come up with a system? If you
could feed your cats twice a day, and try to stick to premium canned food, I
think you would find an enormous improvement in overall health. It does
take some time and patience on your part while your cats are adjusting.
When I changed from free-feeding dry food to scheduled canned food, I had
tremendous guilt pangs because my twosome obviously did *not* want this
change in feeding. I also did it gradually -- not just a "cold turkey"
change. The result in both cats (but especially Duffy, who had been in a
shelter for several months before I adopted him) was remarkable.

What works for some just doesn't work for everyone. We have always (35+
years) free fed quality dry cat food. And we've never had an overweight
cat.

From the way she goes after food you'd think that Amelia used to be a
starving homeless feral. When I go into the kitchen in the morning to
serve up the canned food, she's first in line. And once she's finished her
dish, she makes the rounds of the remaining five dishes to polish off any
little morsels left over. Then she helps herself to some kibble.

But we adopted her from the local shelter folks (the ones that show
kitties at the local Petsmart every weekend) when she was just a couple
months old.
