I'm going to foster baby kittens!!
Long story short: a friend of mine found a litter of 5-week-old kittens
under her house. I called a local feral cat rescue group, and hooked my friend up with them. They put out traps, caught the mother cat and had her spayed. Eventually they caught the kittens as well. Since they're young enough to be socialized, they want to foster them, but all the people in the rescue group are currently fostering other kittens/cats, and they don't have any space for more. So I volunteered, and so did my friend's mom, so we're each going to get two. Rescuers think this will speed up the socialization process because they'll have less feline company. I have a nice large cage - big enough for me to crawl inside, where I will keep them. I can fit food, water, and a litter box at the other end of the cage. I've done this with foster kittens before (in fact, Licky was one of them, back in the day ). I pick them up tomorrow - can't wait! -- Joyce "Bacteria, with a few more bells and whistles." -- Bonnie Bassler, describing human beings |

(dont mean to be rude) That sounds almost like a song lyric: "I hope you don't keep them in the cage, the cage I hope you don't keep them in the cage, the cage I hope you don't keep them in the cage, the cage For their whole lives beat beat beat beat For their whole lives" Sorry, it's Friday afternoon and I'm happy to be leaving work soon. For some reason, that often makes me get silly. Anyway, I don't expect to have them very long. The local rescue group will foster them once a vacancy opens up. Right now all the volunteers already have foster kittens, so I'm just helping out. It will be safer to keep them in the cage because then they won't be wandering all over the place and getting into trouble. They will also be in a separate room with the door closed, so I won't have to worry about my cats getting into a tussle with them. But have them caged gives them extra protection just in case one of my two adult cats manages to slip in. It's a huge cage, btw. I can go inside it! These are 5-week-old kittens. I'm sure they'll have plenty of room. -- Joyce audiophile, n: Someone who listens to the equipment instead of the music. |

What a harrowing adventure for little kittens! But I'm glad that they'll be in good hands. I'll bet you'll spend a lot of time trying to make them not spill off your lap while you're reading or using your computer. For the time being, they are in a very large cage in the bedroom with the door shut. Roxy and Licky know something's up and they're both walking around with their ears back and giving me betrayed looks. So I'm spending a little time with *them*, to reassure them they they're not going to be replaced, or eaten by monster kittens, etc. Roxy just spent a lot of time cuddling with me, so she seems to be relaxing. I also want to give the kittens a chance to relax in their new surroundings. This is the first time they've met me, so I'm hardly a comfort to them (yet). And they've been separated from their two litter mates, who are going home with my friend's mom. So I figured I'd leave them in there for a while with food, water and a litter box, and just let them rest. The mom cat was spayed and released back to the area where she was found. She has been surviving on her own previusly, and she is a feral, so not particularly adoptable. The rescue people also found out that there's someone in that neighborhood, nearby where she was keeping the kittens, who feeds ferals, so they think that's where she was eating. At least now she won't reproduce anymore, and she's been vaccinated. She was also found to be HIV and FeLV negative, with is a relief for me (especially the latter), because I didn't want to be bringing kittens who might be carrying bad viruses into contact with Roxy. -- Joyce It is better to give than to lend, and it costs about the same. -- Unknown (I don't really agree that it's "better to give than to lend", but the rest of the statement is absolutely true.) |

I'm very sure you're going to have loads of fun socialising them. Purrs that all goes well. Judith By the way, how many do you think you'll keep? Ha. I hope neither. This place is too small for 3 cats. While I was at the cat adoption picking up the kittens earlier today, I met a tuxedo kitten, maybe 5 or 6 months old, who was the sweetest little girl. Every time I stuck my finger between the bars and touched the side of her face, she leaned her head against my finger and started rubbing her head all over it. She loved being petted. There was a sign on the front of her cage saying "This cat needs a fosterer!" If I hadn't already been bringing home two kittens, I would have volunteered on the spot. -- Joyce It is better to give than to lend, and it costs about the same. -- Unknown (I don't really agree that it's "better to give than to lend", but the rest of the statement is absolutely true.) |

Wonderful! :-) How long does it usually take to find them homes after they're socialized and weaned? Where I live in TN it's getting harder and harder to find kittens and pups homes. |

I'm not sure - I don't work with the rescue group directly.
