We needed a kitty. In December 2010, we "freed" one from the local SPCA
sanctuary, where he had been held for over *two years*. His name was
Bullwinkle, of which he didn't care one way or another, but we tried
several others -- including Gandolf -- which just didn't fit. We found
that Dudley did, although I call him DoodleBug, Little Bit, Sweetie Pie,
and whatever similar comes to mind. He was nine-and-a-half years old
when we brought him home, a whole year ago. He was a poster boy for the
term "Scaredy Cat". Everything new frightened him. He's getting better
at making himself at home. Dudley is a lovely white and gray. He's so
pretty, loving and lovable, I can't believe nobody wanted him before. On
the other hand, we're grateful he was still there for *us* to love.

Congratulations and many happy returns of the day!
That sounds like me in 1997 -- Princess (Siamese RB 16) had just gone to
the Bridge a month earlier and I was "kitty hungry). So TuTu was
adopted from a rescue group (she had been called Ginger -- not
fitting). She was a large kitty and was estimated to be 8 to 10 months
old. She made herself perfectly at home oimmediately. She has "ruled
the roost" ever since. We have advanced to old age together. MLB

Congratulations! I know how it is, trying to help a scaredy cat feel more
comfortable. Hope Dudley relaxes more quickly than Licky, who's now 8 1/2
years old and still runs off when anyone, including me, walks toward him.
He's a lot better than he was at first, though.

Do you know Dudley's history? Was he a feral rescue, a surrendered pet,
or what? It might make a difference. Licky was a rescued feral and I didn't
get him until he was 3 months old. I don't think he'll ever be fully
socialized to humans because they missed the window when human contact
needs to happen (before 8 weeks, I think) in order for a cat to feel
completely comfortable with us. Whereas if Dudley was a former pet, he's
probably socialized, but then he backslid in the shelter. In that case,
though, it's likely that you can reaquaint him with the joys of human
companionship. I wish you luck!

We got Bonnie when she was 10 weeks old and suspect she missed out on
the Human contact until then. She was so shy when we got her that it
took 4-5 weeks before she would even tolerate a stroke. I wasn't able
to check she was a girl until she was with us 6 weeks or so. She's 7
months old now and is sitting next to me as I type this and will head
butt me when she wants a skritchie but I suspect she learnt from
Sarsi- the first few times she saw Sarsi getting a skritchie she had a

Long time, no hear Jeanne, welcome back. Glad you've got a new kitty to
love.

It's wonderful you took an older cat.

Bless you and have a wonderful holiday season.
