Default Rhett and cat viral disease

Poor Rhett has been coughing strangely, and he has coughed so much that
he lost his voice. To the vet yesterday and she had a hard time seeing
into his throat but did manage to see a large white abscess. She said
it was pretty far down his throat. She has initially diagnosed it as
viral, likely feline herpes. She prescribed a gel that is just l-lysine
but it is flavored so it is easier to give than capsules. She also
prescribed antibiotics and a short term pain med, and while he is very
hard to medicate, he seems to be wanting me to give him his medicine
even though he fights me. By this I mean that in the morning, he just
hangs around when he'd normally be napping after breakfast. I try to
"catch" him when he isn't expecting it but he really seems to be waiting
for me, if you can understand that.

It might take a couple of weeks to see improvement with a viral flareup.
If the l-lysine doesn't help him, he still might have to be sedated so
TED can get a better look at what's going on.

I do understand what you mean about Rhett and the medicine. When she
needed thyroid medicine, Lindy would always run, but only a little way.
Then she'd lie on the bed or couch and wait for me to come give her
the medicine.

Purrs for him to get well soon.

I give my guy powdered Lysine - just sprinkled on his food - he loves it!! It smells really bad in my opinion though. This would be easier!

I hope it's not feline herpes. Boyfie is purring for a complete recovery.for
Rhett.
If it is that, how could he have got it?

Both Rhett and Scarlett were very sick when they first adopted me. In
fact, all 4 littermates were so sick that as one got better, it would
transfer back to them and they'd get sick again, and the guy who found
them decided to adopt them out sooner than he'd planned. So chances are,
they were born with the viruses. Rhett seemed to recover more quickly
once they were here, but Scarlett had to miss her first couple of spay
appointments because she was just so sickly.

The kitten viruses stay with them for life, and can flare up at any
time. I don't know what caused this to flare up at this time.

It doesn't matter how often you post here, you're one of us. I always like
to read your posts.

Judith

I will Judith, and all. He seems to be better, but he had the last pain
med last night. TED said he can only have them short term, so she gave
us 3 days worth. I hope he won't be in pain after this. He let out
something that sounded more like his regular meow earlier today but he
still sometimes tries to but doesn't make a sound. The sad part is that
he is running from me all of the time now. I no longer think he was
waiting for medication by hanging around in the morning. I think it was
more like "...keep your enemies closer ..." kind of thing. He just
wanted to keep an eye on me.
