Newsgroups

Yes, I know this has been asked, before but I am probably going to
switch ISP and am not convinced the new one will go newsgroups. So, how
do I get newsgroups?

I know all about google groups: they are such a dreadful service, so
no, thankyou, if I have to use them, forget it.

I basically want something for which I can use a newsreader, not a
browser. Suggestions, please.

A free one would be nntp.aioe.org many people like News.Individual.NET not
free but only costs 10 EUR per year. Both are text only groups so if you
want binaries you would need to pay more.

I still use Supeenews, although they may have changed their name by now.

Try http://www.news.newsguy.com (I assume they are not exclusively for
the U.S.A.). There is a token annual fee, but not very much, and I
don't have to worry about whether my ISP supports newsgroups or not.

First thing I'd do when changing ISPs is *ask* whether they support Usenet,
and if they don't, don't go with them :-)

Like many others here, I use news.individual.net and pay the 10 Euro a year
for it. Despite being in Germany, their customer service is *excellent*, but
the major advantage for me at least is that by using Individual rather than
my ISP, I can post from both home and work (and anywhere else that has a
news reader and allows me to set my account up) rather than relying on ISP
servers.

news.individual.net also supplies extremely clean feed in the newsgroups - I
don't think I"ve ever seen spam in any of my newsgroups.

The free one, as others have mentioned, is aioe. Its less reliable than
Individual, carries all the spam, and has no tech support but its still
pretty good for the price one pays for it.

Individual is so good, I chose to use it over my ISP's news feed (and my ISP
is one of the few in Australia that still carries all the NGs) because of
the lack of spam and hte tech support. My ISP, whilst carrying NGs, doesn't
readily support them and most of the first line tech support guys have no
clue what I'm talking about when I say my news server have gone down: they
think I'm talking about Reuters or some such. I have to demand their
supervisor and sometimes even their supervisor's supervisor before I get
someone who knows what Usenet is. Individual doens't have that problem.

I use Xnews as my reader and these free ones:

news.eternal-september.org see ---- http://www.eternal-september.org/
or
aioe.org

Eternal requires you to set up a free account and password, and you can use
an email address just for that purpose if you'd rather not use your real
email. I've had good service from both, though aioe used to disappear for
a few days once in a while in the past.

example whether I can record various TV programs while watching another.

Same here, Xnews with Eternal September (previously known as Motzarella).
Great service if you don't need the binary newsgroups. (I don't.)

Binary newsgroups use lots of bandwidth, so you have to pay someone for
that.
