Dat is true. OT, mayhaps wez could ask dat MacGyver kitty is him knows of
any hoomins named Mackey.

[Samuel Redcat, who had followed the group quietly, slinks forward. He
has been quietly pop-catting - whenever Rudy would move even the
slightest Sammy would instantly pop backwards 6 inches or so, then creep
forward again to where he had been.]

Sammy: I can go find himself an ask!

[With that, Sammy turns and slinks very quickly back out of the room. The
assembled cats hear the sound of normally graceful Sam thundering up the
stairs.

A few minutes later they hear the distinctive step-thump of MacGyver
hobbling down the stairs. He shoves the door open wide and strides in.]

MacGyver: What's this I hear aboot a ghost? You, in blue - ye're a
ghostie, are ye? Well what are you doing in my castle?

Ranger [speaking very quickly, trying to disguise how much he's
trembling]: Him sez dat him did wrong to anuffer cat, and him has to find
hoomins related to da ones him lifed wif to confess, an dere name is
Mackey, and dey was aroun here somewheres.

MacGyver: The only Mackey's here aboot used to live in an old castle a
couple of miles from here. It's so old and tumble-down that no hoomins
live in it any more, and there's not even a road going to it. The Mackeys'
that I know live in a small house near the castle ruins. Would you want
me to send someone to fetch the elder of the clan?

Rudy: Yessss, pleeeze!

Rudy: Miz Mackey, I am the ghost of the cat named Rudy. Many a year ago I
lived wif your forefathers at a castle near hear. I shared the house wif
a cat named Angus, mebbe related to your Angus. One day I was feeling
especially kittenish, and ran up and down the tapestries hung from the
wall. I damaged the tapestry badly, but being a kitten I didn't realize
the import of what I had done.

I went to take a nap, and when I woke I learned that the hoomins had
blamed Angus for the damage and threw him into the Out. I never corrected
them, and shortly afterwards Angus died in the Out. For the centuries I
have been alone with my grief and my guilt, and have spent so much time
thinking of the harm I caused to Angus by my silence and cowardice that I
can barely stand to be with myself. Now that you are here, I confess to
you what I did those centuries ago. And Angus, I cannot ask for
forgiveness for my heinous crime, but I do express my sorrow and remorse.

Angus: Rudy, you were a kitten! Kitten's aren't known for being
especially wise or courageous. The effects on my forebear were tragic,
but 'tis naught to be beating yourself over. For myself, though it many
generations of cats ago, I don't hold it against yourownself as much as
against the hoomins who put the previous Angus out.

Angelina: My Lord, talking cats... And talking ghost cats... My Lord! Ok,
Rudy, I know of the incident you speak of. It's written in the clan
histories. My ancestors did finally ken what happened, but only after the
cat Angus had passed. They did not blame your kitten-self either, as you
were indeed just a wee one. My great-great grandfather figgered out what
happened, and they buried Angus in a grave in the clan graveyard. I don't
know if it will help, but ye're welcome to ride with me back to the ruins
of the castle, where ye can confess your role to the spirit of Angus at
his graveside. Do you think that will help your plight?

I come bfore u and ask ur padon for what I did to you family. Iz dat
cat stickink itz head out of ur apron kin to dat cat?

Angus: Yes, I iz! Dat offur kitty was mine great-great- well, lotza
greats - grandfather cat. Rudy, dat was long time ago. It might not haf
been da right fing to do back den, but you has had more den long enuf to
fink about it.

As da repurrsentative of dat long-ago cat, I offer yourownself pardon fur
your past deeds. I just ask dat you ride wif me an mine hoomin to da clan
graveyard, and offer your apologies to da grave of mine ancestor cat.

[Rudy nods his head in acknowledgement. Knowing that dark had fallen, all
of the cats (including Rudy the ghost cat) and the human make their way
up the stairs. They leave the castle and find a couple of horses waiting
for them, one pulling a wagon. All board the wagon and set out for the
Mackey family graveyard.

Once they arrive, all of the cats jump down from the wagon and very clowly
and cautiously enter the graveyard. Angus leads the assemblage to the
grace of the Angus of centuries ago. Rudy falls to his ghostly knees and
repeats his story, asking the spirit of the long-dead Angus to forgive
him. As the living cats watch, what appears at first to be a patch of fog
swirls above the grace then coalesces into the form of a cat. This other-
worldy cat wears a kilt and heavy boots. It speaks to Rudy:]

Rudy, my old friend - I knew from the start what had happened. While I
resented that you did nae speak in my defense, I also understood why you
dinna. You could not haf known the harm that would befall me. And the
centuries you haf spent alone with your guilt and grief are more than
adequate penance for your silence. As my living descendant did, I forgive
you. Please, come join me on the sunny side of the Rainbow Bridge. I have
long been awaiting this day, and haf prepared a nice, comfy place for you.

Rudy: Thank you, my oldest friend! And you living cats, thank you! You,
young orange cat (turning to face OT) - look at the seventh stone in the
seventh room! That is where you will find what you seek.

[The ghostly form of Angus places a paw on the shoulder of the ghostly
Rudy. Rudy's form changes from an indistinct blue glow to an equally
indistinct white glow. Angus' and Rudy's forms hold paws as they walk
away, then finally fade into nothing.]

Ranger (trying really hard not to cry): Well, dat went gudgud! OT, what
did him mean by dat seventh stone stuffz?
