.........to save a cat (UPDATE)
Hey everyone,
Thank you so much for all your kind offers to donate for this kitty. I stopped by the house today and spoke with the old lady who lives there. This is the roommate of the guy I met yesterday. She told me how the cat follows her roommate around and how she sleeps with him. She told me that Grayness was fine and was at the vet. She's schedule to have surgery on Monday to fix her dislocated hip. They are monitoring her because she was coughing or something, so the vet wants to make sure there's no secondary infection before they put her under anesthesia. And while she's talking I'm racking up the prices in my head. (IV fluids, pain and anti-inflammatory medication, day care; all for today, friday, Sat, Sun and Mon. Geez, the surgery alone is going to be expensive.) Then I told her how I posted the story on this newsgroup and that people were willing to help out with the vet bill. She was like, "Really, oh my goodness that would be so nice of them." I don't know how I can coordinate this, but I'm not going to post her address on here for obvious reasons. I can list the veterinary clinic that is taking care of the cat. Mid-Valley Veterinary Clinic 17280 Saticoy St. Van Nuys, CA 91406 (818) 705-4585 The owner's name is Michael Martinez and the cat's name is Grayness. I guess you could send money to the clinic, but it probably would be better to send it to the owner so the clinic isn't hit with a barrage of mail. If you want to send the money to the owner directly, drop me an email and I'll give you his personal address. The lady said I was a Godsend and it was fate that I was there at that time. This is quite amazing for me, actually. It's been a very long time since I was showered with compliments, and I can't tell you what's it's done for my self-esteem. I've never been called a Godsend before. Thank you all so much, Kristi |

Thanks for posting. I know I will be contacting them. I can't do a lot, but every little will help. Karen |

Karen After rehashing the story of Juls in rpch+b recently, and some other fund raising endevors, it seems that a total is needed before donations begin. You don't want to end up with an overage. That wouldn't be fair, nor would the vet know what to do with it. -- Cheryl |

Karen Last time it was coordinated with the vet so we could call the vet office directly and put it on credit cards against the bill. I thought that worked well. I'm sure the owners are nice people but sending them money that may or may not get paid to the vet would be uncomfortable for me. I am sure all of us at one time or another have spent money dedicated for one thing on something else. |

Some of the nice people here helped me get a stray some help at my vet.
They mostly called the vet and donated funds via their credit card tho one sent a check to the vets office. It helped "crackles" out so much, I ended up only having to pay a small amount after the wonderful donations and the vet discounting the bill a bit. I was so thankful since I had no money to help this poor neighborhood stray, crackles was in such bad shape. The donation system worked smoothly and crackles is healthy now, still hangs around and never misses a meal. I wish I could help this time but my vet fund I try to keep in my account is depleted as another stray was in a bad way and I took her to the vet 3 times over the last 2 weeks trying to find out what was wrong, sadly she didn't make it, she stopped breathing when I rushed her back to the vets when she started gasping. She was such a sweetie, why do people leave behind such nice pets. p |

Yes, were I in a position (sorry, I'm not) to send $, I would rather send it directly to the vet specifically for Grayness. Chances are, if the vet were overpaid, they would either (a) refund the monies or (b) ask if we would mind if it be used charitably towards something like a humane shelter or some other animal who needs help. I don't like to doubt people, I really don't. But as you said, funds given to one cause are often used for "something else". Not that I'm saying the 70-something woman is a crack addict, but you know what I mean! LOL Jill |
