Default Kitty Biting

How do you stop a kitten from biting one's flesh so danged HARD?

It's not like she lacks for toys to bite on.

Don't offer your hands as "toys" and whenever she does it anyway just freeze
and hold still until she lets go.

That, and let out a high-pitched squeal (kitten-speak for "ow!"). Instinct
should kick in and the cat will know that it's hurting you, and let go.
Eventually, she will learn that biting is bad, and won't do it any more
(unless unless she's *very* angry).

Stop moving your hand and make a loud "ow!" noise. You could even hiss
at the kitten to teach him it's not ok to bite. Be consistent.

This rings a bell. I bit the kitten back, if I recall correctly. It's a vague
memory from five years ago. Now I did not hurt her or anything like that. In
all the years that followed, she never bit me hard again, although daily she
will still pretend to bite and lay her teeth on me. I am sure there are more
sophisticated methods but this one worked out well for us.

Gently but a little firmly nibble back at the kitten. She's not aware that you
do not have a cushion of fur. There are more sophisticated methods than this -
an expensive kitty behavioral psychologist could confuse you with. The squeak
method mentioned here also works. Lots of squeaks and the occasional nibble.
I'm not into shunning but that works too.

When you find out, let me know! Melisande is not a kitten,
but lately her "love bites" tend to chomp down harder and
harder, if I don't immediately remove the portion of my
anatomy being bitten. (She's even drawn blood, a few times.)
