Interesting dichotomy during The War For Southern Independence
Interesting dichotomy during The War For Southern Independence (1861-1865): During some time of The War US Gen US Grant owned slaves after Gen Robert E Lee CSA had freed his slaves
"...Julia Dent Grant (wife of Gen.US Grant*) came from a slave-owning family and was an apologist for slavery throughout her life and the Civil War. The Grants owned slaves that came from Julia's father and Grant himself was responsible for supervising them. These slaves were not freed until 1865 when Missouri officially abolished slavery...." * added to excerpt otherwise googleable for confirmation "Slavery at Arlington From its earliest days, Arlington House was home not only to the Custis and Lee families who occupied the mansion, but also to dozens of slaves who lived and labored on the estate.... ....Lee (Robert E*) officially freed the slaves on December 29, 1862...." * added to excerpt otherwise googleable for confirmation too |
