It's easy for women to say "Snip the male", and it's easy for men to say "
Fix the female".
Women probably secretly dream of whacking off the male genital, with a
knife. :'(

It makes FAR more sense to neuter the male, IF you're doing just one.
AND it will help his health as well.

But MOST sensible is to neither both males AND females.

Yes, but sometimes females come into heat early at 6 months old and their
owners don't notice even though they intend to get them spayed soon.
I hate the idea that some people have, that if you have a male cat, don't
spend the money on getting him neutered as it doesn't matter. It does
matter.
Unless they are pedigree cats whose bloodlines need to be passed on, IMO,
both sexes should be spayed/neutered.
In the UK, if you cannot afford to have it done, there are charities that
will help with the cost. They advertise that fact in local newspapers every
day here so there's no excuse. Except laziness.

Yes, both male and female should definitely be fixed. Ironically, it
is even more important (considering the problems of overpopulation) for
males because they can impregnate large numbers of females. Beyond the
problem of overpopulation, both genders will actually be healthier.

Just as in the UK, there are charities here (USA) that will help with
the cost. In some cases, they will take care of 100% of the cost. A
clinic is held in the little town where I live twice a week, and they
offer vaccinations and spay/neuter free of cost for those who quality
(based on income).

Hondo was scheduled to be fixed, but didn't make it. He's been spending
so much time with the yellow female, I decided to let him add his DNA to
the cats in this area.

That's a terrible thing to do. You are condemning future generations to
neglect or the death penalty with that attitude.

MaryL

Exactly. Boyfie has a lovely coat pattern too, but the minute I could catch
him he was off to the vet to remove his ability. It's all good, he doesn't
wander, he stays close to home. I can't say he doesn't fight, but they are
territorial fights rather than about girls: they are not so serious. Fights
about girls can be extremely serious, involving ripping of ears to bits and
various bites resulting in abcesses and wandering too far to get home.
Easily solved with the snip.
I'.m not going to reply to Lord Bergamot again.

Of course it does. Every pet I've ever had has been neutered, and I've
had a number of both males and females.

Joy

I agree, Joy. I've only had one cat, Persia. But I certainly checked
with the vet to make sure she was spayed. If she she had not been I
would have had it done.

It does not make sense to not spay/neuter pets (or ferals on a TNR
program) or to want them to indiscriminately reproduce.

The same is true in most of the U.S. - many shelters offer discounts, or
set aside specific days when they provide the service free. (Some
veterinarians do, too.)

Human population could do with a bit of regulating, too, alas! I know
that in the Bible God told Adam to "Be fruitful and multiply", but our
present seven billion is more than the planet can sustain, and it
promises to grow worse.

I won't debate that issue (I chose not to reproduce) but will always say
it is irresponsible not to spay/neuter pets. A specious attitude such
as "spreading DNA" is ridiculous.

Let's not go there, Evelyn. My point is that all "ordinary" boycats and
girlcats should be preventing from breeding. In the UK, we don't seem to
have quite the problem you have in the US, in fact it's not so easy to get a
kitten where I live. Probably because there is always an advert in the
local newspaper "Having problems affording your cat's neutering/spaying?
We can help"
I had every intention of not keeping Boyfriend but he needed the snip and I
paid 5 pounds for it via that scheme. When I couldn't part with him, I paid
them 40 pounds extra. This was in 2003, I thought that should cover it.
At that time he was such a fraidy cat that I thought meeting the vet for
neutering would freak him out and he might scratch and bite. Not so. They
said he was " a perfect gentleman"
He was over it in 24 hours.

And if any cat has a better coat pattern than him, I'd like to see it. It's
not an excuse to let him out intact. No way.
